Sweden: More than 1.3 Million viewers during Semi Final 1 of Eurovision 2023

The First Semi-Final of the Eurovision Song Contest became once again the most watched show of the day in Sweden. 1,305,000 viewers in Sweden followed the show in which Loreen made it to the Grand Final.

However, the number of viewers in Sweden has decreased compared to 2021 by 257,000. It is still to be seen if the numbers will increase for the evening of the Grand Final now that Loreen is one of the biggest favourites to take the trophy back home.

Meanwhile you can watch our exclusive interview to Loreen in the video embedded below:

It is a childhood dream to be the one who hands out the Swedish points in Eurovision. No one is more motivated than me.

The selection of the spokespersons is usually conducted among TV profiles, artists, musicians or people connected to Eurovision and that led SVT to give to Farah Abadi this honorable mission.

Loreen: “I want a woman to win Eurovision this year”

Sweden representative for this year’s Eurovision, Loreen, gave an interview for Greek channel Alpha.  The interview took place during the morning show, Super Katerina, and to journalist Yiannis Poulopoulos .

Loreen who is also the favourite to win Eurovision 2023 spoke about her decision to compete once again in Eurovision and revealed who she would like to win in May in Liverpool.

“It’s not a risk for me (to enter in the competition) because my goal is not to win or lose.  My goal is to create something that matters to me, that will positively impact you. That’s what I’m doing this for!

We are still working together because there was a security issue. I think you won’t be disappointed.

All my stage presence is organic. If you watch the presentation every time it’s a little different with the fog and the wind. You never know how it will end. It might be a little different but it’s for the best.

I would like a woman to win Eurovision this year. And since I’m connected with Alessandra from Norway, and since I share a similar style of music with Paloma… Oh my god, I can’t decide.”

Måns Zelmerlöw: If Loreen wins Eurovision, I will not be returning soon!

BBCEurovision Castpodcast recently hosted the former Eurovision winner, Måns Zelmerlöw, who won Eurovision back in 2015 for Sweden. For the past years, Måns has been living with his family in the United Kingdom and stated that in the event of Loreen winning Eurovision, he will have to delay his return to Eurovision that he was planning to, as a tactic to have more possibilities of winning again, being difficult for a country to win twice in a row.

Måns Zelmerlöw feels amazed by how much the image of the United Kingdom has changed in Eurovision, after achieving the second place last year with Sam Ryder. To the hostess question whether he would also return to Eurovision-like Loreen-he answered that:

I was planning to do that somewhere in the future but in case Loreen, representing Sweden, wins for the second time, then there has to be some time between Loreen’s win and my return…

Regardless the delay that a possible Loreen’s win can result to his planned return, Måns Zelmerlöw literally glorifies Loreen and is sure that she will be crowned as a winner in May.

The last minute of her performance is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen and even if her song is not a new version of “Euphoria”, it manages to create something equally good. I thought that Norway was an undeniable favorite to win Eurovision, but now no one can threaten Loreen.

Later, Måns is not hesitant to ask the podcast’s hostess about her co-journalists’ opinion on Loreen’s performance, with her stating that:

They all think of the same thing, they feel that Eurovision is actually over!

Sweden: Issues with Loreen’s staging?

Tonight the final of Melodifestivalen 2023 takes place, after 4 heats and a second chance semi-final. Tonight’s absolute favourite is none other than the winner of Eurovision 2012, Loreen, who will perform “Tattoo” tonight, claiming to represent Sweden in the contest for the second time.

Loreen has already got all eyes on her, with her song having already amassed 8 million streams on Spotify and having climbed to #1 on the Swedish TOP 50 on the same platform. The interest is also piqued by her very unique and technologically advanced stage performance, which includes two platforms with led screens, one filled with sand and the other hanging above it.

Technical issue with the weight of the platform

In the great possibility that Loreen will win the representation of Sweden at Eurovision 2023 tonight, her team will have to deal with an important technical issue. The second platform hanging above Loreen is required to be supported by the ceiling. The weight of this platform, however, is 1.8 tons! The lighting rig, from which this platform hangs, will probably not be able to support it in Liverpool.

Photograph from the lightning rig from the Melodifestivalen 2023 stage!

In fact, in the photo above we can see that Loreen’s platform is hanging on the lighting rig throughout the show and it may be practically impossible for the same to happen on the Liverpool stage.

Furthermore, the lighting rig at Eurovision is significantly larger than the one used at Melodifestivalen, as it needs to support a much larger number of acts, and it needs to ensure that this year’s 37 participants have the same capability to present what they want on the Eurovision stage.

John Lundvik’s corresponding request had been rejected

The reluctance of the Eurovision organisers to allow objects of advanced technology to hang from the ceiling can be seen in the similar problem that the Swedish delegation faced in 2019.

In John Lundvik‘s Melodifestivalen 2019 performance, a large led construction stood out, hanging from the ceiling. However, its transfer to the Eurovision stage was not possible due to the rejection of the Swedish delegation’s request by the organisers and a similar structure which was supported on the ground was used.

The attitude of SVT and the organisers towards the emerging technical issue

Anders Wistbacka, project manager of Melodifestivalen, clarifies that any discussion with EBU and BBC will take place after the end of Melodifestivalen, when we will know for sure who the Swedish representative is, and says that:

“We haven’t reached that point yet, but I think you can now hang things that you couldn’t before. However, I don’t know if that means this 1.8 ton structure can be hung or not.”

The organisers of this year’s contest, on this issue, state that:

“It (SVT) knows all the details of what can and cannot be used on the Liverpool stage.”

Anders Wistbacka also states:

“We’ll see what happens. It might not work. If it doesn’t work, then we’ll find another solution if Loreen does win. We may, however, have another winner and have to adjust to other circumstances.

We will know what we will have to adapt to depending on the winner. This adaptation may be either easy or challenging.”

Loreen, says that she doesn’t have an alternative plan for her staging so far, however if she is called upon to come up with an alternative plan, she will! She competes tonight in the Melodifestivalen final with “Tattoo“, in the running order of 10!

If the speculations that Loreen will win the Sweden representation tonight are indeed confirmed, do you think she will be able to carry her stage performance to Liverpool? Stay tuned to Eurovisionfun for all the news for Sweden’s participation in Eurovision 2023!
