Switzerland: Five Artists To Represent the Country!

One of the founding members of Eurovision Song Contest, Switzerland, chooses its representatives through an internal selection with multiple stages until the final result since 2019. This is how it happens for Eurovision 2024 as well, while the submission procedure opened on August the 10th and closed on August the 24th for all those various artists who wish to reperesent Switzerland at Eurovision.

More specifically, at the very first stages of the selection procedure, there is a Swiss jury who have already listened to all the submitted songs and have gradually ended up to a list with less and less entries. At the later stages, there is also an audience jury which includes both Swiss and international juries’ members, who have participate at the past either as juries’ members or even not.

Thus, according to Jean Marc Richard from RTS Switzerland, some details have been released for the Swiss Internal Selection, which are the following:

  • Almost 420 songs were submitted to represent the country.
  • On December the 5th, the five final artists recorded their songs at the SRF Studios in Zurich.
  • The juries of professionals and the international audience jury will listen to the final five songs, while the final decision will be taken at the beginning of the new year.
  • The song for Eurovision 2024 will be released in March of 2024.
  • It is rumored that among the final five artists former representatives of the recent years are not included.

Until then, take a look at Switzerland’s entry for Eurovision 2023, “Watergun”, performed by Remo Forrer, which ended up in the 20th place at the Grand Final:

What has been the common secret for days has now become official. RIK some minutes ago during the presentation of its new programme, announced that Silia Kapsis will represent Cyprus in Eurovision 2024 with a song by Dimitris Kontopoulos! Cyprus: The artist will be revealed next week!

No matter if Belgium “caught up” faster with the artist announcement for Eurovision 2024, the Cypriot Broadcaster is almost ready for the official announcement of the artist that will represent the country in next year’s contest. The announcement will take place next week and we will get to know the second artist that will fly to Malmö, barring anything unforeseen.

As you first read through EurovisionFun, RIK, after the inglorious end of Fame Story as a selection method for the representative of Cyprus in the contest, the broadcaster directly put forward the backup plan they had already planned. Thus, both the artist and the song will be selected by an internal selection in which Cyprus will participate in the 68th Eurovision Song Contest.

Everything is ready, even some pending procedures have been resolved and so it’s a matter of time for the official announcement of RIK. Although, the announcement will not only include the artist reveal but we do not want to spoil anything further and ruin the suprise of the Cypriot delegation, where they hope for a good result, even higher than the last attempt with Andrew Lambrou who ended up in the 12th place with the song “Break A Broken Heart”.

However, the preperation of the Cypriot delegation for Malmö has been already intesive, having started their planning even for the stage presence.

A few more days of patience and soon all our questions will be answered!

EXCLUSIVE: Cyprus will internally select its entry for Eurovision 2024 | The artist announcement soon to be made!

As the “Fame Story” selection format is opted out, Cyprus will choose its entry for Eurovision 2024 internally and we are really close to the announcement of the artist that will fly the Cypriot flag to Malmö next year.

Internal selection is the final solution for Cyprus

Regardless the initial idea of hosting a national final in January live from Nicosia, with 3 to 5 competing participants, the Cypriot National television decided to use the method of internal selection in order to select its next Eurovision act. Cyprus has been choosing its Eurovision acts internally since 2016 and RIK’s choice is proven to have an effect. Since 2016, Cyprus has managed to qualify to the Grand Final every time, except in one occasion, in 2022.

RIK’s team, considering that they have a strong song in their hands, but also an artist who can impress on the stage of the competition and wanting to defuse the tension between RIK and ERT regarding Fame Story, accelerated all the internal procedures needed for the internal selection.

Fame Story goes to OMEGA

It is indicative that Fame Story, no longer associated with the Eurovision contest and the Cypriot representation in it, will not even be broadcast on RIK. Based on what it was announced to the media in the last few hours, the musical talent show will be broadcast by OMEGA TV, as is the case with all STAR programs in Cyprus.

The official announcement in the coming days

Barring the unexpected, Cyprus will be the first country to announce its artist for Eurovision 2024.

It is just a matter of time till the official announcements are made from RIK, naming the artist who will succeed Andrew Lambrou on the stage of the competition.

We are sure the this announcement will cause a sensation among Eurovision fans. We will soon find out!

United Kingdom: Internal selection is the most likely scenario for Eurovision 2024!

United Kingdom, the host country of Eurovision 2023 recently announced that will not longer collaborate with TaP in order to select its Eurovision acts. BBC first collaborated with Tap Records in 2022, managing to achieve a 2nd place with Sam Ryder. This marked UK’s best result since 1998, which consequently brought Eurovision in British grounds. Sam Ryder’s success, renewed their collaboration for 2023 and the nation was represented by Mae Muller, who did not only repeat 2022 success, but instead finished second-last

Since the announcement of the departure of TaP from the British Eurovision selection, a reasonable question was raised regarding the method under which BBC will choose its next Eurovision act. The answer is given by the Head of BBC Entertainment who commented that:

It has been really good working with Tap, actually, and using their expertise. We have had two amazing finalists and the British public have gotten behind them. Sam Ryder is a proper superstar now. This years entry has been in the top ten and done really well.

People have talked to me ‘should we do a big show on the BBC, how do we select our next act?’ It is a big thing singing live in those giant arenas, and you do need a really experienced performer who has done arena shows before to do that. I think we will continue going to specialists in the industry to help us pick our act going forward.

Bearing in mind the above, we can assume that BBC will continue to choose its next Eurovision act internally for the 5th time in a row. A national selection is probably not in the plans of BBC as its number-one priority on selecting an artist is experience and expertise.

Mae Muller although being a fan favorite did not come to bookies expectations and finished second-last. She was highly criticized inside the UK for her weak performance and vocals and probably her low placement raised doubts on which should the British contestants’ standards be.

Greece: The demoscopic jury vote takes place today!

The Greek Public Broadcaster ERT, announced that the Greek entry for Eurovision 2023 will be selected by a combined vote of a demoscopic jury counting for 50,6% and a professional jury counting for 49,4%, a voting pattern similar to the new system which was announced a few months ago by EBU, to be used at the Grand Final of Eurovision 2023.

After a public invite for interested audience members to be part of the jury, almost 3000 people submitted an application. 70 people were selected after an online draw and the demoscopic jury will vote today, Wednesday 28th of December. Participants are split based on their age groups as follows:

  • 18 – 25 years old: 25 jury members
  • 26-35 years old: 20 jury members
  • 36-45 years old: 15 jury members
  • 46 years old or older: 10 jury members

The demoscopic jury will give their scores for the 7 shortlisted songs chosen by the professional jury, at the headquarters of ERT in Athens.

What comes next?

Once the demoscopic jury vote is done, meetings will be held with the artists that are part of the shortlist. The management team of ERT and the professional jury will meet with their artists and their teams, allowing them to present their plans and vision for their song, in case they are selected to represent Greece at Eurovision 2023. Then, the professional jury will meet and give their scores for the entries. Scores will be combined based on the before mentioned percentages, and the entry for Greece in Eurovision 2023 will be determined.

The Greek representative and title of its entry will be announced until mid January.

Switzerland: The entry for Eurovision 2023 is almost chosen!

Switzerland has already announced that it will internally select the artist and song that will represent it at Eurovision 2023.

The German-language public broadcaster SRF opened the submission of entries between August 25 and September 8, with the selection process being the same as that used since 2019, which actually gave Switzerland a qualifying run for the first time, as well as two top 5 finishes.

As in previous years there will be several stages in the selection. At all stages, entries will be evaluated by two panels of judges. The first jury will consist of 100 Swiss viewers. The second jury will consist of 20 international music professionals, who have already been members of their countries’ Eurovision committees. Each jury will account for 50% of the total score. However, in the event of a tie, preference will be given to performers who are citizens or residents of Switzerland.

Yesterday, through his personal page on Facebook, the representative of Romania in the contest in 2010 and 2014, Ovi Jacobsen, revealed that he is a member of the panel that will choose the participation of Switzerland, in the upcoming Eurovision, which is actually in the final stage selection and chances are there is already a winner.

As SRF has announced, the winning song and artist will be revealed in early 2023.

Marius Bear represented Switzerland at Eurovision 2022 with the song Boys Do Cry, placing 17th in the grand final.

Greece: ERT is ready for Eurovision 2023!

It’s ERT’s time and Eurovisionfun is in the thick of it all! Learn everything about ERT’s plans for Eurovision 2023, and more… What is this year’s selection procedure? When shall we expect an official announcement? Who have expressed an interest in participating?

As August approaches, the Greek National Broadcaster is ready for the Eurovision 2023 project. Shortly before the summer holidays, the ERT’s executives, involved in the past years’ selection procedure and preparation, have finalised their planning, with the selection procedure scheduled to commence, as last year, at the beginning of September.

The team leaders

Eurovision project’s supervisor, for the third consecutive year, will be none other than Dora Chiraki, while Sofia Dranidou will also return to her position for the third consecutive year as Greece’s head of delegation. You don’t change a winning team, especially when this team has now the necessary expertise and knowledge to go one step further. Indeed, this stability, after several years, in people surcharged with the Eurovision project, is a goal that all participating broadcasters seeking good results in the Contest aim to achieve.

The procedure for selecting country’s representative

Although we do not know the exact procedure for the selection of Greece’s participation in Eurovision 2023, ERT is expected to remain faithful to the formula it has been following in recent years. That is, to give the opportunity to record labels and production companies to submit their proposals, and to come up, through an internal selection by a committee designated by ERT for this purpose, to the proposal that will bring the best results for Greece in May.

Moreover, it is now widely accepted that ERT’s committee has correctly chosen the songs and artists for the last three years, thus marking a triumphant return of Greece to the elite of Eurovision countries. People in the field, albeit at first being skeptical about the committee’s objectivity and judgement, now agree that the selection method carried out by ERT gives everyone the opportunity to take part in the procedure, keeping away unnecessary drama and negative publicity. At the same time, it has also managed to arouse the interest of artists, who in previous years would not have participated in Eurovision.

ERT expects to capitalise on all of the above to an even greater degree this year, since more and more artists are coming forward and expressing their interest in participating in ERT’s internal selection, estimating a way bigger turnout than the 43 proposals submitted last year.

The dates

Moving to the practical aspect of the matter, it is expected that the official announcement for the submission of proposals will be issued just after the presentation of the ERT’s program, which will take place on September the 6th. Of course, it remains to be seen if ERT will insist on the internal selection or if it will try to engage the public in some way, although as we noted above, the former is more likely.

The goal for Eurovision 2023 is clear; a place, for the third year in a row, in the top-ten. A goal which is not as easy as it seems. Besides, at the moment only three countries managed to have two consecutive places in the top-10, one of them being Greece. Of course, after this year’s eighth place, the bar is particularly high, but the Greek team is optimistic that it will do credit to all Greek fans.

The artists who have expressed interest so far

The artists who, in one way or another, have expressed their interest to represent Greece in the next ESC (which will take place in the United Kingdom) are the following :

  • Vasilis Kourtis
  • Melissa Mantzouki
  • Antonia Kaouri
  • Leon of Athens
  • Katerina Stikoudi
  • Kalomira
  • Klavdia
  • Aggelos Archaniotakis
  • Tania Breazou
  • Evangelia
  • Joanne et al.

Eurovisionfun will be again this year on the forefront, supporting the Greek entry, ERT and our team with all our strength and vigour, because as we have previously said, they are making a worthwhile effort!

Exclusive: More artists interested to represent Greece in 2023!

Even though it is not announced yet, the Greek public broadcaster ERT will most likely follow an internal selection for Eurovision 2023, which comes as no surprise after 2 consecutive top 10 results. There are many artists that are already thinking to submit a song to ERT for Eurovision 2023 and we have information on more artists that are interested to submit song(s). Lets take a look at them, while it needs to be emphasized that they all have the intention to apply but decisions will be taken later in the summer.

Anastasia

Newcomer in the Greek music scene Anastasia, became known through a viral TikTok video she posted of her song “Amarties” which was released 5 months ago and has more than 22 million views on YouTube. Anastasia and MINOS-EMI, the record company she is signed to, are more than positive to send a song for Eurovision 2023 so it’s possible that she will apply to represent Greece next year.

Good Job Nicky

An artist that came very close to represent Greece last year was Good Job Nicky, who was among the 5 shortlisted submissions that ERT considered. He recently stated that he is open to submit a song again, while his record company COBALT is also in favor of another attempt. It is not clear yet if he will submit an entry for 2023 or for 2024, since he is advised by many to take a break before submitting a song again. Below you can listen to the song he submitted to ERT for 2022.

Anxhela Peristeri

The Eurovision 2021 representative of Albania Anxhela Peristeri, recently said in an interview that she would like to go to Eurovision again, but this time with Greece. She lived many years in Greece, while she collaborated with many famous Greek artists including Eleni Foureira. If she has the right song, it is very likely that she will submit it to ERT.

Kalomira

This comes as no surprise since Kalomira’s comeback to the contest is rumored the last years. She was preparing songs to submit for Eurovision 2022 with a team of international songwriters, but she did not submit them to ERT.  In an interview she recently gave, she expressed her wish to return to the contest, while she is thinking to submit songs for 2023.

Along with the names that we reveal are considering submitting songs to ERT, artists from our suggestions for Greece 2023 are also considering sending songs for next year’s contest. Vassilis Kourtis, Melisa Mantzoukis, Antonia Kaouri, Leon of Athens and possibly Tania Breazou are likely to be a part of the internal selection for the next representative of Greece in Eurovision.

ERT is expecting more than last year’s 43 submissions, due to another top 10 result and the increasing popularity of the contest, especially online.

Israel: More information about the internal selection is out!

The Israeli public broadcaster KAN announced a few days ago that the Eurovision 2023 representative will be chosen through an internal selection. In one of the morning radio shows of KAN, more information for the process are revealed.

From 2015 and with the exception of 2021, Israel used talent shows to select the representative. For 2023, a panel of 9 entertainment industry professionals will work on choosing the artist. Criteria include to be a well known artist with experience on live performances, that is successful in the local market. The hosts mention that there is already an interest from established Israeli artists to represent Israel. Names like Omer Adam and Static & Ben El Tavori are already on the table, among others.

Budget concerns was also a reason to chose the artist internally, due to high cost of production of the national selection shows. When it comes to the song, it will be chosen once the artist who will represent Israel is picked. The aim is to find the best song that ‘matches’ the artist.

Israel was represented in Eurovision 2022 by Michael Ben David who did not make it through to the final coming 13th in the second semi-final with 61 points.

What do you think about Israel going internal for 2023? Tell us in the comments!
