Eurovision 2024: Which rehearsal has the most views on TikTok?

Two days ago, the first rehearsals for all 37 entries officially concluded, and today the second rehearsals are expected to be completed, with the Big 5 and the host country Sweden taking the stage at the Malmö Arena for the second time! This means that we are getting closer to the Eurovision week, with the Dress and Jury Rehearsals for the first semi-final starting on Monday.

However, as we know on TikTok, all the first rehearsals are uploaded. Apart from their performances, we’ll also get a sneak peek backstage before they take the stage for the first time in a video of about one minute.

One of the many features of TikTok is the ability to add songs to each user’s video creation. However, the TikTok algorithm is usually able to detect the song used in the video, assign it to the correct track, and then include it in the total number of videos where that sound has been used. Based on this capability, the most popular songs before rehearsals were from the Netherlands and Italy. Will they receive the same promotion as before?

The ranking with all the entries (in brackets will be the day of the rehearsal) based on the increasing number of views after one week from the start of the first rehearsals on TikTok is as follows:

  1. Netherlands: Joost (fourth day) – Europapa – 3.2 milion views
  2. Greece: Marina Satti (third day) – ZARI – 2.7 million views
  3. Poland: LUNA (first day)– The Tower –1.5 million views
  4. Switzerland: Nemo (third day) – The Code – 1.2 million views
  5. Serbia: Teya Dora (first day) – Ramonda – 980.1 thousand views
  6. Ukraine: alyona alyona & Jerry Heil (first day) – Teressa & Maria – 971.2 thousand views
  7. Croatia: Baby Lasagna (first day) – Rim Tim Tagi Dim – 812.3 thousand views

The views were counted at 17:45 CET.

Based on the views from the first semi-final, the following countries will qualify (in ascending order): Poland, Serbia, Ukraine, Croatia, Ireland, Azerbaijan, Cyprus (seventh), Lithuania, Luxembourg, and Australia.

Similarly, from the second semi-final, the following countries will qualify: Netherlands, Greece, Switzerland, Georgia, Israel, Belgium, Armenia, Albania, Latvia, and Austria.

TikTok has played a significant role in the success of Eurovision songs in recent years. For example, Duncan Laurence’s winning entry “Arcade” became a global hit a year after winning the competition when it was used in over a million videos on TikTok. One of the earliest TikTok successes from Eurovision was Getter Jaani’s “Rockefeller Street”, which went viral on the platform in 2018 and has since been used in over two million videos. Let’s not forget that Armenia’s entry in 2022 by Rosa Linn with “Snap” gained over a billion views on the platform. Finally, Norway’s entry last year gained significant worldwide publicity months before the competition week, where it secured fifth place.

Eurovision 2024: Denmark’s second rehearsal!

The second rehearsal for Saba, the Danish candidate for Eurovision 2024, has just concluded on the stage of Malmö Arena. In an attempt to win one of the 10 tickets to the grand final, the artist will perform the song “Sand” in the second semi-final on May 9.

Who is Saba?

SABA is proud to be the first brown, queer woman to sing for Denmark at the Eurovision Song Contest. At home she is a strong role model for minorities and the LGBTQ+ community and is open about her own struggles with mental vulnerability and being bipolar, making her an inspiring symbol of hope and perseverance, which she hopes many can relate to.

For several years, SABA worked as a model and photographer, but it was in 2023 that she seized the opportunity to focus on music, by taking over the lead role in the musical HAIR from her twin sister, Andrea.

She wants to play an important role in making Malmö 2024 an inclusive celebration where she can represent many different people, and Denmark, in her own unique way.

The Rehearsal 

This power ballad builds from the soft, low-key start to the huge crescendo finish, and the staging does the same – using lighting and glittery graphics to add layer upon layer until Saba’s vocals fill the whole arena.

It’s very similar to the staging we saw at Denmark’s national final, Melodi Grand Prix, just on a bigger and more epic Malmö scale. Saba is wearing a white pant suit – if it’s not the same she wore at MGP, it’s very similar. The pockets are filled with sand, and she scatters it as part of really beautiful armography routine that mirrors a projected version of Saba on the LED wall behind her. Really simple, but all the more impactful for it.Lots of floor smoke in the final run-through, which gives the whole performance even more drama.

Eurovision 2024: Which rehearsal had the most views on the third day?

Yesterday, rehearsals continued energetically, with the Malmö Arena hosting the first eight countries of the second semifinal! Be sure to also read our article from yesterday regarding the views of the eight countries that completed their rehearsals on Sunday.

However, as we know on TikTok, all the first rehearsals are uploaded. Apart from their performances, we’ll also get a sneak peek backstage before they take the stage for the first time in a video of about one minute.

One of the many features of TikTok is the ability to add songs to each user’s video creation. However, the TikTok algorithm is usually able to detect the song used in the video, assign it to the correct track, and then include it in the total number of videos where that sound has been used. Based on this capability, the most popular songs before rehearsals were from the Netherlands and Italy. Will they receive the same promotion as before?

In less than 24 hours (April 30, 2024, time  CET), since the first clip from the rehearsals was uploaded, we have a indicative sample of which rehearsal was favored by the audience (here it should be noted that the videos were uploaded one after the other with a one and a half hour interval and there was a significant delay in their publication).

The rehearsals that had the most views are:

  1. Greece: Marina Satti – ZARI – 1.6 million views
  2. Switzerland: Nemo – The Code – 391 thousand views
  3. Albania: Besa – TiTan – 221.7 thousand views
  4. Austria: Kaleen – We Will Rave – 199.4 thousand views
  5. Armenia: LADANIVA – Jako – 183 thousand views
  6. Malta: Sarah Bonnici – Loop –  175.3 thousand views
  7. Czechia: Aiko – Pedestal – 165.2 thousand views
  8. Denmark: SABA – SAND – 156.7 thousand views

With this small sample, we can infer that:

  • It’s worth noting that with the first rehearsal of the Greek entry has been published 18 hours prior, within this timeframe, ZARI achieved a record number of views compared to any other entry in previous years – where TikTok is used as a platform for posting snapshots of the first rehearsals. The Greek entry seems to have resonance across Europe as it has gathered 170 thousand likes.
  • Second in the ranking is the favorite for victory, Switzerland, which trails the Greek entry by 4 times in views.
  • Many rearrangements can occur between the fourth and eighth positions since there are countries whose rehearsals were published at the end of the day, resulting in them not receiving enough publicity.

The top six countries with the most views from the two days are as follows:

  1. Greece: Marina Satti – ZARI – 1.6 million views
  2. Poland: LUNA – The Tower – 1.2 milion views
  3. Serbia: Teya Dora – Ramonda – 842.2 thousand views
  4. Ukraine: alyona alyona & Jerry Heil – Teressa & Maria – 817.7 thousand views
  5. Croatia: Baby Lasagna – Rim Tim Tagi Dim – 682.7 thousand views

TikTok has played a significant role in the success of Eurovision songs in recent years. Listen to the performances of Ireland, Denmark and Iceland in “A Little Bit More”!

Just like last year, some time before the first rehearsals of the countries, the show called “A Little Bit More” aired on the official Eurovision YouTube channel.

So, for all this time before the rehearsals, Eurovision TV will upload different performances of the artists, like different versions of their songs, or covers of songs from other artists.

In today’s videos, you can listen to an Intimate version of Ireland’s entry “Doomsday Blue” by Bambie Thug as well as the acoustic version of Denmark’s entry,“SAND” performed by Saba:

Eurovision 2024: Joint announcement of nine participants about the happenings in Gaza!

The representatives of nine countries participating in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest have publiced a joint statement regarding what is happening in Gaza. More specifically, they are asking for ceasefire for permament peace to prevail and for the hostages to return in Israel. It is worth noting that they refer to Gaza as occupied Palestinian territories by Israel.

Down bellow you can read the statement:

” We want to begin by acknowledging the privilege of taking part in Eurovision.

In light of the current situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and particulary in Gaza, and in Israel, we do not feel comfortable being silent. It is important to us to stand in solidarity with the oppressed and communicate our heartfelt wish for peace, and immediate and lasting ceasefire, and the safe return of all hostages. We stand united against all forms of hate, including antisemitism and connections.

We feel that it is our duty to create and uphold this space, with a strong hope that it will inspire greater compassion and empathy.”

The announcement is signed by the representatives of nine countries, mainly from those that had reactions to Israel’s participation in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest and these are:

  • Bambie Thug – Ireland
  • Gate – Norway
  • Iolanda – Portugal
  • Megara – San Marino
  • Nemo – Switzerland
  • Olly Alexander – United Kindom
  • SABA – Denmark
  • Silvester Belt – Lithuania
  • Windows95Man – Finland

The announcement was then posted by Belgium’s representative, Mustii, on his social media.

Denmark: DMGP 2024 viewership was a little higher than last year!

Last Saturday, the national final of Denmark took place, with Saba and the the song “Sand” being the winner of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2024, and the coubtry’s representative in Eurovision 2024!

996 thousand people, watched the final of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, a number that’s 27 thousands higher than the 2023 edition. In contrast with last year, the viewership is a bit higher, and DMGP was the most popular show in Denmark for the previous week.

In 2022, 985 thousand people watched the final of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix. In 2021, there was a great viewership of 1.532.000 viewers and in 2020 this number was 1.194.000, a number that was much lower than 2019.

Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, the national final of Denmark for Eurovision Song Contest, was concluded with Saba being crowned the winner with the song “Sand“.

Denmark: DR defends Saba’s win in DMGP 2024!

The national final of Denmark, came to a conclusion yesterday, with Saba being the winner, and getting the ticket to Eurovision 2024. However, right after, there were many negative reaction, regarding her win and the fact that she ended up third in the televoting.

There were hundreds of reactions and comments in DR’s posts on social media, claiming that the public brodcaster, does not take into consideration the pubic vote, but just the jury vote.
It’s worth mentioning that this is the second year with results in that way. In 2023, Nicklas Sonne was the one that won the televote, but after the jury vote, Reiley was the winner of DMGP 2023, ending up in another non-qualification.

However, the General Manager of DR, Erik Struve Hansen, defended these results, claiming that there is no problem with the voting system of DMGP:

“The system reflects how things also take place in the Eurovision final. After all, there are both jury and viewer votes, and we have chosen that solution this year too – and I think it’s actually a very good model.”

He then went on and stated:

“There is nothing wasted, because it is, as I said, a fifty-fifty decision. The viewers have 50 percent and the jury has 50 percent. But it is clear that you are disappointed when your favourite does not win. I understand that.”

According to the above results, Denmark will be represented by Saba and the song “Sand”, and she is going to take part in the first half of the second semi-final:
