From Wednesday 30 November to Sunday 4 December, the Eurovision audience had the opportunity to vote for their favorite entries among 10 categories through the official Eurovision Instagram account. A few hours ago, the winners of these categories for the Eurovision Awards 2022 were announced, as they emerged after tens of thousands of votes in just a few days.

Germany: New information on the national final “Unser Lied für Liverpool 2023”!

New information about the German national final for Eurovision 2023 “Unser Lied für Liverpool” (“Our song for Liverpool”) is given to us by Thomas Mohr and Marcel Stober in their podcast “ESC Update“.

Specifically, the selection process takes place in three stages, in the first of which the candidate songs for participation in the national final have already been evaluated by a jury made up of the ARD-ESC close team as well as other experts. Therefore, in addition to the editorial team for Eurovision with members, among others, the head of the German mission Alexandra Wolfslast and the editor Stefan Leidner, the committee also included representatives of eurovision.de (eg Marcel Stober) and representatives of the radio (eg Thomas Mohr ). The purpose of this committee was to involve people who deal with Eurovision and have the necessary knowledge about it. The jury heard and selected the best from around 600 entries at its meeting on December 9, with the exact number of entries not yet known.

In the second stage of the selection process, the songs selected by the jury will be presented to a second international panel of experts, whose members and selection criteria remain unknown. A similar international committee was used, however, in the process of selecting the country from 2018 until 2021, which did not vote but expressed its opinion regarding the candidate songs.

In the third and final stage of the process, the closest editorial team, the aforementioned ARD-ESC will select which (possibly seven) entries will participate in the national final, along with one entry that will be determined by a vote on TikTok.

Regarding the date and venue of the national final, which channel will broadcast it and who will be the presenters, relevant announcements are expected to be made in early January, according to the NRD press office.

Germany was represented at Eurovision 2022 by Malik Harris, who took last place in the final with the song Rockstars.

After two years of absence due to the healthcare crisis, the Music Awards Ceremony 2023 of Serbia and the former Yugoslavia will return on January 25 and 26.

The purpose of the event is “to celebrate artistic creativity and the development of the music industry in the region”. The countries of origin of the nominees are Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia.

This year, the valid nominated songs are those released between 01.10.2021 and 15.10.2022.

A quick glance at the shortlists reveals several names that are familiar to fans of the Contest. Let’s take a closer look at them by category:

Martin Österdahl: “The decision to exclude Russia from Eurovision was hard”!

The executive supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest said the decision to exclude Russia in 2022 was “hard”.

In a recent interview, Martin Österdahl, the executive supervisor of Eurovision, said although the contest was not political it must always reflect the basic values of democracy.

Martin Österdahl made the comments whilst speaking to Abba’s Bjorn Ulvaeus, who was guest editing the flagship UK radio show, BBC’s Today program.

Asked if the decision to exclude Russia from the contest earlier this year was hard, Osterdahl replied:

“It was, and it still is. How Europe feels very much affects the contest. It is also that when you look back in time you see that the Eurovision Song Contest is like a log book of what has happened in Europe, what the trends have been in Europe,” he added. “But, also, what is the kind of mood and sentiment of Europe, and what is the social context of Europe at the time.”

Why was Russia excluded from Eurovision in 2022?

There was international outcry Russia invaded Ukraine in February this year, with the cultural arena becoming an expression for anti-Putin sentiment.

Performances of Russian art and by Russian artists were cancelled in Poland and the UK, with businesses withdrawing from the country and Russian products withdrawn from supermarket shelves in the west.

Amidst all this, a row brewed about Russia’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest with neighbouring Finland the first to say they wouldn’t compete with Russia, while Sweden, the Netherlands and Norway all called for Russia to be excluded.

Eventually the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) did exclude Russia from the contest, with Russian national broadcasters suspending their memberships and the EBU preventing them from participating in future contests.

Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra went on to win in Turin, Italy. However, next year’s contest will be hosted in the city of Liverpool after it was judged too dangerous to hold the event in Ukraine.

“When we say that we are not political, what we always should stand up for are the basic and ultimate values of democracy. Everyone is right to be who they are,” Osterdahl continued. This will be a Eurovision Song Contest that really shows the values that we talk about – solidarity, reaching out, uniting through music.”

Albania: “Duje” to remain in Albanian for Eurovision 2023!

A few days ago, Festivali i Këngës 61 ended with Albina & Familja Kelmendi being the ones who received the ticket to represent Albania in the Eurovision 2023 contest, with the song “Duje“.

Speaking to RTSH, Albina made revelations about the song “Duje” in Eurovision 2023. In an interview with Albania’s public broadcaster, Albina confirmed that “Duje” will remain in Albanian, meaning that Albania is one of the countries that chooses its own language in Eurovision every year since 2018.

However, one more tradition of the country that will continue in 2023 is that the song will be revamped ahead of the competition this May in Liverpool as she revealed.

Slovenia: Joker Out! recorded their entry for Eurovision 2023!

Slovenia was the fourth country to announce its representative for Eurovision 2023. Pop/rock band Joker Out! were internally selected by  Slovenia’s public television RTVSLO, something that came as a surprise since the country has selected Eurovision entries through national finals, apart from once.

Joker Out! consists of Bojan Cvjetićanin, Kris Guštin, Jan Peteh, Jure Maček and Martin Jurkovič . They have already released four singles and a full length album since 2016 when they were formed. They are one of the most popular Slovenian artists in recent years. In 2020 they won the award for the best new artist, and in 2021 for the artist of the year! All their concerts are sold out, while they recently released a single in Serbian, aiming to target a broader market in the former Yugoslavia region.

Through an Instagram post, the band announced that they have finished recording their Eurovision entry. The song was recorded in Hamburg at the Cloud Hills Studio. Lyrics will be in Slovenian and the entry will be released on February 4th.

Greece: These are the results of the vote of the Audience Jury!

Yesterday, Wednesday 28/12, the 70 members of the Audience Jury heard for the first time the 7 candidate songs of ERT for Eurovision 2023. In a well-organized process by all accounts, we also have a first fairly reliable picture of the voting results. Eurovisionfun having contacted many of the committee members, but also from social media posts, related forums and groups dealing with the Eurovision contest, we are able to reveal to you the results of the voting.

So, based on all the above, the three songs that are leading in the Audience Jury’s rating are the following:

  • Melissa Mantzoukis – Liar
  • Klavdia – Holy Water
  • Victor Vernicos – What they say

We may not know the exact order of the above three songs, but without any doubt they are the three songs that the Audience Committee singled out and were first in their preferences.

On the other hand, the three songs that seem to be in the last three places of preference of the Audience Committee are the following:

  • Monika – I’m Proud
  • Konstantina Iosifidou – We’re young
  • Antonia Kaouri & Maria Maragou – Shout out

Right in the middle of the preferences, it seems, is the participation of Leon of Athens – Somewhere to go.

We remind you that the vote of the Audience Jury constitutes 50.6% of the final result, with 49.4% determined by the seven-member jury of ERT.

Immediately after the New Year, the artists and their groups will meet the artistic committee and the management of ERT in separate appointments, in order to present their plans for the stage appearance, the promotion of the song, etc., if they are selected. The artistic committee will then give their own score, where combined with the score of the Audience Committee, they will determine the artist and the song that will represent Greece in Liverpool. The announcement is expected by mid-January.

The titles of the 7 shortlisted songs have been announced today by the Greek Public Broadcaster ERT. One of these will represent Greece at Eurovision 2023.

The titles are:

  • Antonia Kaouri & Maria Maragkou – Shout Out! 
  • Konstantina Iosifidou – We are Young
  • Klavdia – Holy Water
  • Leon of Athens – Somewhere to Go
  • Melissa Mantzoukis – Liar
  • Monika – I’ m Proud
  • Victor Vernicos – What They Say

Greece: The 7 artists of ERT’s shortlist have been revealed!

The Greek entry for Eurovision 2023 will be selected by a combined vote of a demoscopic jury counting for 50,6% and a professional jury counting for 49,4%, a voting pattern similar to the new system which was announced a few months ago by EBU, to be used at the Grand Final of Eurovision 2023.
