Israel: Is Noa Kirel’s participation in Eurovision 2023 in danger? | The message of EBU’s General Director to the country’s prim minister!

In a previous article we informed you about Israel’s possible abscence in Eurovision 2023, as the country’s government thinks about shutting down the public broadcaster and specifically its news department.

If this ends up happening, then the channel will not no longer meet its commitment to a full range of programming as public service media, putting in doubt its eligibility for EBU membership and ability to take part in major events such as the Eurovision Song Contest.

The EBU’s Director General, Noel Curran, has expressed his concern about threats to the integrity and independence of Israeli national public broadcaster, KAN, in a letter to the country’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu:

“Independent news and information form an integral component of public service media organizations and make a key contribution to media pluralism in well-functioning democracies…. With the primary interest of the public in mind, that directly funds KAN, we trust the new government will also safeguard the independence of KAN and enable it to continue to fulfil its mission in democratic society.”

General Director Curran, finished his letter by saying:

“The EBU’s responsibility is to ensure that it supports all our Members in their mission to serve the interests of the general public in the best possible manner. These developments risk undermining KAN’s capability to meet its commitments as a member of our international alliance of public service media organizations.”

Causing particular concern were recent remarks by the country’s Communications Minister, Shlomo Karhi, that challenged the freedom of the press and threatened to shut down KAN’s news operation. In a radio interview, he stated that:

“The public shouldn’t fund one particular channel, there should not be public broadcasting.”

Since its creation in 2017, KAN’s television, radio and online offer has included a diverse range of news and information, entertainment, cultural and educational content. Its membership of the EBU also enables the broadcaster to benefit from world-class sports rights, including the 2022 World Cup, and live entertainment, notably the Eurovision Song Contest that was organized by KAN in 2019, following Israel’s win the previous year.

Back in 2017, the then Israeli government had issued statements showing intent to dismantle KAN’s news operation. These were finally abandoned when the EBU insisted on this being a condition of the Israeli broadcaster’s hosting of the 2019 Song Contest.

In the end, we would like to remind you that Israel had already confirmed its taking part in Eurovision 2023 back in March 2022 and has selcted Noa Kirel internally as their representative. Will the young singer be able to perform on Liverpool’s stage?

Israel: Noa Kirel will chose between two songs for Eurovision 2023!

Israeli representative for Eurovision 2023, Noa Kirel, has revealed more information about the preparations for her next year’s participation in Liverpool.

During her interview she mentioned in particular, that she has recorded two tracks to chose her Eurovision song.  Furthermore, she will have the last say when making this final decision in collaboration with her team, Doron Medalie, composer of several former Eurovision songs from Israel (2015, 2016, 2018 and 2020) and the Israeli broadcaster.

The two potential songs have English lyrics with some phrases in Hebrew.  Musically speaking, the Israeli song will have some distinctive oriental elements . According to Noa, her goal is that her song becomes a global success.  In addition to this, it was revealed that one song will be about “love and romance”.  The second song on the other hand is about “empowerment”.

Michael Ben David represented Israel this year with his song I.M.  However, he did not make it to the finals ending in 13th place in the second semi-final.

Israel: Noa Kirel will have artistic freedom and a $900,000 budget for Eurovision!

Noa Kirel has revealed her plans to represent her country in the next Eurovision Song Contest.  Among other details, Kirel revealed that Israeli broadcaster KAN has granted her full artistic freedom for her performance.  She will also have a $900,000 dollars budget to bring her ideas to stage.

Noa Kirel spoke with Mako about representing Israel next year at Eurovision.  She made some interesting revelations about her plans and the next steps to select her song.  These are some of the most remarkable announcements she  made:

  • KAN has granted Kirel total artistic freedom to participate at Eurovision.
  • The song will have an Israeli flavour and identity
  • She will have a $900,000 dollars budget to work
  • She has talked with Eurovision winner Netta

Artistic Freedom

KAN has granted Noa Kirel full artistic freedom to decide the song.  This is understandable given that Kirel is already an international artist with a growing career.  However, not all artists have enjoyed this level of autonomy.  In her interview, Noa says that it was precisely this level of autonomy a crucial factor to accept representing her country at Eurovision:

From the second I entered the first meeting with them, they told me, ‘You have the artistic freedom, and one of the reasons we chose you is that you bring the songs you bring and the language you bring and the work you bring, and we want you to go with it

Nevertheless, Noa said she understands her song has to comply with the Eurovision rules and that the broadcaster is responsible for everything.  Further, the selection of the song is a team work and the people involved will play an important role in the whole process.

A song with an Israeli flavour

According to Noa Kirel she was offered the opportunity to work with songwriters all over the world.  However, her plans are to work with a local Israeli team for Eurovision.  This means that Israeli writers and composers will be in charge of creating the song.

Moreover, during the interview, Noa says the Israeli 2023 song will have a flavour of the country.  This could be present in the lyrics of the song but it could also be a part of the musical production which would bring “all kinds of ethnic, Mediterranean and even Israeli directions”.

Eurovision 2023 budget

The total production budget for Eurovision 2023 will be around 900,000 dollars.  This impressive amount would allow the artists to bring her ideas onstage in the United Kingdom.  In any case, the national broadcaster KAN will not carry the full burden of supporting these costs.  Two-thirds of the budget are covered by Noa Kirel’s team with the remaining part being in charge by the public broadcaster.

According to Noa Kirel’s agent Roberto Ben Shoshan, the amount could increase should Noa require a bigger budget.  In this case, he has already expressed his willingness to support Noa financially in her Eurovision journey.

Noa has stated that she is not planning to make any profit from her Eurovision experience.  On the opposite, the main goal of her participation is to give Israel one of their best results in Eurovision:

As far as I’m concerned, it’s worth it. It’s no secret that the financial side is less interesting to me, maybe because I’m very young and these are still things I’m less concerned with, but when it comes to Eurovision I’m coming to give my million percent, and if it means losing money and adding from myself, I will do it. I will do what is best for my country and for me

Noa meets Netta

Noa Kirel talked with Israeli winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, Netta Barzilai.  According to Noa, the call took place before she confirmed her Eurovision participation.  Noa Kirel asked Netta what she thought about this opportunity.  Netta’s advice to Noa was to accept this offer.  The Eurovision winner encouraged Noa to take this opportunity.  In fact, Netta’s participation and victory has allowed her to continue performing all over the world.

Nevertheless, Netta and Noa music careers were not on the same stage when they were offered to represent Israel.  In the case of Netta, she was still a relatively unknown artist that was starting her career.  On the other hand, Noa released her debut single Medabrim (Talking) in 2015.  Many other successful singles have followed through.  Noa Kirel won the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Israeli Artist several times since 2017.  She also performed at the Miss Universe beauty contest in 2021 held in Israel.

Israel: A Songwriting Camp will take place to create Noa Kirel’s song!

According to the Israeli Eurovision news website Euromix, the song with which Noa Kirel will represent Israel at Eurovision 2023 is set to be created at a Songwriting Camp.

For the first time, Israel is expected to organize a “Songwriting Camp”, a format previously used by countries such as Sweden, Norway and Bulgaria, where composers and songwriters will have the opportunity to work together to create possible entries for the Israeli participation.

The organization of the “camp” seems to have been undertaken by the managers of Noa Kirel, who have already invited songwriters who have collaborated with Noa in the past. Among the names rumored to take part are Doron Medalie (Israel 2015, 2016, 2018), Ron Beaton, Jordi, Nitzan Kaykov, Itay Shimoni and Eitan Peled, while Noa Kirel herself is set to be actively involved in the creative process.

Noa Kirel was selected by a ten-member panel of experts that included professionals from the fields of culture, music and television. The committee members considered 78 male and female singers, assessing their experience in performing live in front of a big audience, as well as their popularity in the domestic music market.

In Eurovision 2022, Michael Ben David represented Israel and did not advance to the Grand Final, taking the 13th place in the 2nd Semi Final with 61 points.

Israel: “Politics is involved in Eurovision and everything does not depend on me”!

In the press conference held by Israel’s public television KAN and in which Noa Kirel‘s representation of the country at Eurovision 2023 was formalized, the popular artist referred to the risk she takes by accepting the offer to participate in the contest, since as she pointed out everything does not depend on herself, as politics is actively involved in Eurovision! But why did she say yes to Eurovision despite the possibility of failure?

A woman on a mission

“I am very excited and I feel like we are starting a mission. I was suddenly informed some time ago that I will represent Israel at Eurovision”, the singer initially said at the press conference she gave at the Carlton Hotel in Tel Aviv.

It started with a shock, it hasn’t stopped since. They stop me on the street, at concerts and tell me about it! Lately I’ve also learned about the risks, and that it’s not all about art and live performance there. I’m already imagining myself on the crazy Eurovision stage. With a decision from the heart, I put everything aside and go with complete faith. I always felt proud to represent my country, even today I feel very honored. I want to thank the committee that chose me, it was not a given. I’m already starting work today and as you know I’m working hard. So wish me luck.

Accepting KAN’s proposal

Tal Freifeld, executive of KAN, emphasized the changes in the way of selecting this year’s participation of Israel, while emphasizing on the fact that Noa Kirel is the No. 1 in the country.

This year we decided to change the rules of the game and instead of choosing a representative from this or that reality show, we simply chose the number 1 artist to represent us at Eurovision. We waited for Noa to decide and it took her some time, but we promised full cooperation with her team. Noa will put on a great performance and we will give her all the tools to represent the country with honor.

Noa then commented on the time it took her to make up her mind:

I needed time to myself. It’s a crazy show and on a huge stage. I got backlash from people each giving their opinion on whether I should go or not. There were people who said I would win and there were those who said I would be upset if I didn’t do well. In the end I decided what my heart said. Of course there are worries, I’m human and I get scared sometimes. It is an honorable place and on an honorable stage. Politics is involved and things are not up to me, I might fail naturally. But I’ve always taken risks, they usually work out, it’s part of the career and who I am today. I wanted to represent my country and take that risk.

Israel: Noa Kirel will most likely confirm her Eurovision participation on a press conference on Wednesday!

She’s already added layers to the Eurovision 2023 iceberg of intrigue by saying her Eurovision 2023 participation was only a “maybe” – despite KAN (Israel’s national broadcaster) revealing she was at the top of its wishlist.

But now Israeli media are reporting that Noa Kirel will confirm her Eurovision participation at a press conference on Wednesday.

KAN’s Eurovision committee drew up a list of 78 artists who have performed well on the charts in recent years and then debated among themselves to create a ranked list of artists for ESC 2023. Noa, definitely Israel’s most popular star, came out on top.

However, that didn’t mean that Noa and her management were willing to accept her placement on top and to submit to any and all demands from KAN.

In mid-July the 21-year-old star told on an Israeli newspaper that she needs more time to “brainstorm” a potential Eurovision run.

“It’s a competition that relies on politics, but on the other hand it is also a big stage and that offers a lot exposure,” she said. “Fear has never stopped me from trying things and life is about taking risks and getting up. Is this the thing that will expose me to the world? Or could it be the other way around? That’s why I need to brainstorm and understand how I approach this.”

On Monday, Noa revealed in an interview that she’s made specific demands regarding her participation that include being involved in the writing and choosing of the song and directing the eventual stage show. KAN had planned to have Noa perform three or four songs on a TV show, similar to what Eden Alene did ahead of Rotterdam, and have a jury and the public decide her entry.

It’s thought that KAN and Noa will give some sense of how the song will be chosen during the press conference on Wednesday.

Eran Suissa, the entertainment correspondent for Israel Hayom, previously reported that “Toy” songwriter Doron Medalie was contacted by Noa Kirel’s team about joining the Israel team, most likely as a songwriter.

Medalie previously worked as Noa’s artistic director, giving her hits like “If You Are a Man” and “Tikitas”. He also turned Israel’s fortunes around at Eurovision with songs like “Golden Boy” and “Made of Stars”.

Howeveer, he told that he wants to see some big changes within Israel’s Eurovision team and that such changes will be essential for Kirel to climb the scoreboard. He suggested strongly that there are messy scenes behind the curtain at broadcaster KAN.

“We need to devote enormous resources to Noa and a professional team made up of the best talents and professionals we have. To produce such a system will require a real revolution in attitude. We create the illusion that it is so simple but the truth is that it is the most complex undertaking.”

Listen to one of Noa Kirel’s most popular songs “Thought About That”:
