Spain: Ruth Lorenzo expresses her frustration on a participation on Benidorm Fest 2024!

Despite her strong interest, Ruth Lorenzo has decided not to take part in Benidorm Fest 2024. The singer who represented Spain at Eurovision 2014 has revealed that she was considering taking part in the next RTVE national final, but this year’s rules will prevent her from doing so.

Through her social media accounts, the singer explained that she wanted to participate with her song “Woman”, one of the tracks of her latest EP. In order to be able to compete, she decided to remove it from her album, before its release on April 14.

However there was a change in plans. Ruth Lorenzo said:

“I was informed, unofficially, that this year at Benidorm Fest they were going to accept 100% songs in English.

Being the most important song of this EP, with the most important message and with a sound that marks a before and after in my career, I wanted to give you the gift of presenting it at Benidorm Fest trying to return to Eurovision after ten years. Unfortunately, “Woman” was not chosen to compete at the Festival.”

The track is set to be released on September 1st, and she considers it very important to her now that she is in a new phase of her life where she is 100% free after overcoming her problems with her previous record company.

“I am now establishing myself, as an independent label for future work”

Benidorm Fest rules allow song lyrics to be mainly in Spanish and/or another official language, however, lyrics in other languages are acceptable as long as they do not exceed 40% of the total lyrics.

The previous winner of Benidorm Fest and Spain’s representative at Eurovision 2023, was Blanca Paloma with the song “EaEa” and placed 17th in the Grand Final:

Spain: 733,000 Euros Budget for Eurovision 2023!

According to the Spanish website Publico, RTVE is budgeting expenses of  733,000 euros to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023.

The Spanish public broadcaster is spending a total of €732,940 for the country’s participation in the 67th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. This is the second highest budget allocated to the competition in the past decade, with the exception of only the €782,044 spent in 2019.

The budget for Spain’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest has increased by 11.45% compared to 2022. The increase in the budget is due to the increase in the entry fee RTVE must pay to compete to €347,697, an increase of €45,000 euros compared to 2022. the highest participation amount that RTVE has paid since 2012, when the broadcaster paid over 316,000 euros to participate.

The other increase is in the budget allocated for the official music video of “Eaea” which is 52,156 euros, as last year the corresponding amount was covered by Chanel’s record company, BMG.

RTVE will announce the final entry fee for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in the weeks following the competition in Liverpool, UK.

Spain: RTVE jury results are out!

According to maldita.es the main favourites of the RTVE jury were Aritz Arén, Alice Wonder and José Otero. The proposals that obtained the lowest scores were those of Siderland and Karmento: ‘Que esclati tot’ and ‘Quiero y duelo’ could have been left out of the contest if RTVE had not modified the bases to expand from 16 to 18 participants.

The favourite of the bookies and eurofans, Fusa Nocta, with her song ‘Mi Familia’ was able to receive 79 points, which made it tie with Sofia Martin’s ‘TUKI’ placing 12/11 consecutively.

The latest version of this year’s rules indicates that the jury could select up to six substitutes. For the 2022 Benidorm Fest, the jury chose 14 participants and six substitutes. If this year the same system had been repeated, ‘Aire’ by Sharonne and ‘Quiero arder’ by Agoney could also have been left out, which were the fifteenth and sixteenth most valued proposals, respectively.

Spain: Benidorm Fest 2023 participants will be announced on October 27!

According to an announcement by the Spanish broadcaster RTVE, a few days remain until the official announcement of the artists who will compete in Benidorm Festival 2023, where they will compete to represent Spain at Eurovision 2023.

On Thursday October 27, in a special program presented by Inés Hernand and Rodrigo Vázquez, we will see the announcement of the 16 artists chosen by RTVE’s team of experts among the 876 proposals submitted in total from September 1 to October 10.

In this show, each one of the 16 lucky candidates will be presented separately, making reference to their career so far, the reasons that led him to apply, and information about their candidate song. The event will also feature last year’s Benidorm Fest winner, Chanel, who dazzled Europe in Turin and will soon be releasing the official song of the World Cup in Qatar.

The next day, Friday October 28, a press conference with the contestants will take place.

We remind you that for Benidorm Fest 2023, songs were submitted by new talents unknown to the general public as well as by emerging artists, with increased interest from established artists, singers from talent shows, and even artists who have participated in Eurovision in the past.

Notable among the proposals is the presence of singers of all ages, from 16 to 76, bands and alternative artists, while a proposal was also submitted by one of last year’s Benidorm Fest contestants. There are also entries of artists with a lot of followers on TikTok, as happened last year with Britain’s Sam Ryder who took second place in Turin. The songs submitted cover a wide musical spectrum, from commercial pop, ballads, folk, flamenco, fusion and rock, to latin, rap and reggaeton.

Eight songs will compete in the first Semi-Final on 31 January and the other eight will compete in the second on 2 February. The top four from each semi-final will advance to the Grand Final on February 4, where eight acts will battle it out to win the second edition of the Benidorm Festival and the golden ticket to represent Spain in Liverpool.
