MTV EMA 2023: Eurostars among the award recipients!

The 2023 edition of the MTV Europe Music Awards may have been cancelled due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war for security reasons, however this did not prevent the hosts of announcing the winners of each award category. Winning artists were revealed yesterday and hence will receive their awards at a later stage.

The regional European MTV awards have a strong connection with Eurovision, as many artists emerge each year from the contest and introduce themselves into a wider audience. As a result, there could not be an MTV winning artists’ list without the presence of Eurovision stars.

Specifically,

  • Måneskin, the winners of Eurovision 2021, have won in the “Best Rock” category as well as in the “Best Italian Act“. This marks the second time they have been awarded with the “Best Rock”, following 2021 and the first time with “Best Italian Act“, after being nominated for three times.
  • Gjon’s Tears has been awarded the “Best Swiss Act” award for the second time, following 2021, the year he competed in Eurovision, finishing third.

Best Nordic Act

This year, we could all agree that the “Best Nordic Act” category was a bloodbath. All the three artists nominated for the prize were Eurovision 2023 artists. Loreen, Alessandra and Käärijä were nominated, indicating the big commercial success they had after achieving a top five placement in Liverpool.

The choice was hard, but in the end Käärijä from Finland won the award of the “Best Nordic Act”.

Other Eurovision artists nominated

Along with the aforementioned, there were more Eurovision stars nominated for an award in the MTV EMA 2023, such as

  • Sam Ryder (United Kingdom 2022) was nominated for the “Best Push Artist” category
  • and S10 (Netherlands 2022) was nominated for the “Best Dutch Act” category

“Best Israeli Act” missing

Reading the winning artists’ list, we can easily notice the absence of the “Best Israeli Act” category. There is no information given by the awards committee about the exclusion of the category referring to the Israeli music scene and to what extent it is connected with the ongoing war.

Nevertheless, on the nominated artists’ list, Noa Kirel, the Israeli representative in Liverpool, was also found. Noa Kirel, even before her introduction to the European audience the past May, has been a multi-nominated and multi-awarded artist in the MTV EMAs.

MTV Europe Music Awards 2023: Which Eurostars are nominated for the awards?

The nominations have beeen announced for the MTV’s Europe Music Awards, which is the European version for MTV’s American Music Awards. Taylor Swift tops the list with the most nominations (seven), followed by Olivia Rodrigo and SZA with six nominations. Next on the list to claim the most awards are Måneskin (winners of Eurovision 2021) with four nominations.

Apart from Måneskin, there are more Eurostars being nominated than any other year, proving that the Eurovision Song Contest is strongest and the most artistically influential contest in the world.

The candidates are:

  • Måneskin (Italy 2021) as Best Group, Best Rock, Best Live, Best Italian Act
  • Sam Ryder (United Kingdom 2022) as Best Push Artist

  • Loreen (Sweden 2012,2023) as Best Scandinavian Act
  • Gjon’s Tears (Switzerland 2020,2021) as Best Swiss Act

It’s worth noting that for the first year, a Eurostar managed to be nominated in four categories, just as for the first time three Eurostars are nominated in the same category to claim the Best Scandinavian Act Award.

Apart from Eurostars, some artists who previously participated in the National Final to represent their country in the contest also have their honor. More specifically, in the category of Best Italian Act together with Måneskin, the candidates are: Annalisa (Sanremo 2013, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2021), Elodie (Sanremo 2017, 2020, 2023) and Lazza (Sanremo 2023).

Netherlands: S10 will announce this year’s 12 points!

Last year’s Dutch representative S10, will announce the points on behalf of the Dutch jury during the Eurovision 2023 final. S10 made the announcement on Tuesday via Instagram. More specifically she said:

“I was allowed to distribute the points on behalf of my country”

Regarding last year’s poins, Jeangu Macrooy was in charge of announcing them. AVROTROS introduced this particular tradition in 2016, that is to say that the points will be announced every year by the artist of last year’s participation. In 2019, Waylon refused to follow this tradition. In 2021, Duncan Laurence was replaced by Romy Monteiro, as he got infected with COVID-19.

Netherlands: Didn’t give permission for the broadcast of S10’s Live-on-Tape!

Dutch participating broadcaster, AVROTROS, didn’t give its permission for the broadcast of S10’s Live-on-Tape. According to Songfestival Update, an AVROTROS spokesperson stated:

We have submitted a request to the EBU not to put it online. We would like the performance from the live shows to remain as a memory for the public and the viewer

Just like in 2021, all countries had to record their performance in advance, as a backup in the event of a corona infection. This year it turned out not to be necessary. In 2021, Australia participated through their live-on-tape performance, because Montaigne was unable to come to Rotterdam due to the corona pandemic. A band member of Daði Freyr (Iceland) tested positive in Rotterdam. They participated with images from their rehearsal.

From June 14 to June 23, the live on tapes for Eurovision 2022 will be released on the official Eurovision channel on Youtube. These performances were recorded prior to the competition and would have been used if a delegation could not travel to Turin due to Covid-19 restrictions or if someone in the delegation was offended by Covid-19 while in Turin and could not participate in live shows.

It has not been clarified yet, which public radio and television stations did not give their permission for the publication of their live on tape. We will definitely not watch the live on tape video of Ukraine, since it was excluded from its recording due to the ongoing war in the country.

S10 represented the Netherlands at Eurovision 2022 with “De diepte”, the first Dutch-language song in the contest since 2010. She finished 11th in the Grand Final with 171 points, including 12 points from the Italian jury.

Eurovision 2022: Netherlands’ Second Rehearsal!

Next up is Netherlands. S10, a 21 years old singer, rapper and songwriter, wears a very stylish black dinner jacket that’s cropped at the front but has long tails at the back. Her staging is a smoky plinth and some dramatic lighting, and it delivers real impact. The Dutch delegation seemed very happy with the first rehearsal. Unfortunately, the betting odds didn’t seem same as happy based on the little information we got about S10’s staging. Will the delegation convince with their second rehearsal?

The Second Rehearsal

Netherlands’ rehearsal begins with a shot from above moving towards S10 with herself being shadowed. At first, there is light only on S10. The stage floor has a square white linear light and S10 is standing on its center. There are many close shots on S10’s face. In the first chorus there is a small light burst and white lights are moving slowly from the sun structure behind. In the second verse the ‘sun’ turns from black to white, while towards the end the bottom half of it turns into a yellow sea. At the start of the second verse S10 is shadowed again, as opposite to the white sun behind. In the second chorus the lights behind are moving a bit faster and become more reddish. S10 is vocally good. At the final part of the song, she takes a few steps forward and we have wider shots. There are red to white lights coming out from the sun. Black and white colors are characteristic. There is no use of the backround LED screen. Generally Netherlands’ performance focuses a lot on the lights and S10 herself. The performance is atmospheric, melancholic, but relaxing. S10 passes through succesfully the emotions she wants. The performance ends with close shots on S10’s face and a shot from above moving again towards S10.

Below you can watch an exclusive preview clip of S10’s second rehearsal:

Netherlands: Without the “laser” effects in Turin!

S10 and the Dutch delegation, will travel to Turin with a different stage perspective for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

As the singer said in the Dutch talk show “Matthijs gaat door”, the laser effects that were used in the first live performance of her song “De Diepte“, will not accompany her performance in Turin.

Specifically, S10 said about her staging:

Yes, we could do it like that there as well… but that is not the plan. This (the lasers) was an idea of the talkshow.

The experienced team behind S10, for which you can learn more here, seems to want to surprise the fans of the contest and take the song to a different path from that of the first live performance.

You can remember the first live performance of “De Diepte” by S10 below:

The Netherlands will performe in number 8 of the running order in the first semi-final on May 10, and as of now the betting odds consider her qualification for the Final almost granted.

But what do you believe will be the final result for “De Diepte”? Write us in the comments below!
