President and CEO of TV Romania: I will support not to participate in Eurovision and the option of suing EBU!

The President and CEO of TVR announced on Friday evening that he will support the TVR’s governing bodies to stop public television from participating in Eurovision. Dan Cristian Turturică is also considering the option of suing EBU and claiming damages for image damage.

The reaction of the president-general director of TVR comes after this year’s Eurovision scandal: EBU claims that there would have been voting irregularities in the case of six countries, including Romania.

TVR disapproves of the way in which EBU handled the situation generated by the votes cast by the national juries, on the occasion of the semifinals and final of the Eurovision 2022 contest.

Romania: Threatens to withdraw from Eurovision Song Contest after response to juries voting irregularities

TVR is threatening to withdraw from the Eurovision Song Contest, after the EBU’s response to irregular voting patterns from six juries in the second semi final of Eurovision 2022, including Romania.

The Romanian broadcaster is threatening to withdraw from the Eurovision Song Contest due to the damage that the EBU’s response to jury voting at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. The Romanian public broadcaster is also stating it is considering legal actions against the European Broadcasting Union!

The Romanian broadcaster joins other broadcasters in arguing that Sweden, Australia and Belgium also voted for each other, the full examples cited can be seen on the TVR website.

The three countries cited voted as follows:

  • Sweden awarded: 12 points to Australia, 8 points to Belgium
  • Australia awarded: 12 points to Sweden, 8 points to Belgium
  • Belgium awarded: 10 points to Sweden, 8 points to Australia

TVR disapproves of the way in which the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) handled the situation generated by the votes of the national juries during the semifinals and the final of the Eurovision 2022 competition votes were divided in a way that raised suspicions.

While some countries have been penalized, the jurors’ grades have been replaced by EBU grades – through a so-called non-transparent “algorithm”, which in turn raises suspicions – for others no sanctions have been applied. Worse, they received additional points, directed by the EBU on behalf of the penalized countries (details at the end of the press release).

The impact of these suspicions on the competition and on the reputation of the sanctioned televisions could have been completely eliminated if the EBU had communicated its concerns to the parties involved as soon as they were observed, ie on Wednesday, 11 May, after the second semi-final for the jury.

Had the EBU communicated to the delegations the notes given by the jurors of the six countries the day after the vote and convincingly explained the existence of an “irregular voting pattern,” TVR would have had time to react to promptly investigate the allegations and correct the situation, if any.

In this way, on Thursday, May 12, we could eliminate any suspicion that hovered over the votes given by the jurors during the second semifinal, and during the gala, for the public, the finalists could be announced based on the notes of the jurors, not on those generated by the “algorithm.”

However, this would have been possible only if the EBU had treated TVR as a real partner and had taken into account the fact that the Eurovision Regulation is the one that gives full independence to national juries and that televisions can neither find out nor influence the scores. granted by jurors, than long after they were sent to the EBU. Thus, TVR did not find out until after the final the way in which the Romanian jurors voted in the semifinals.

Unfortunately, because the EBU decided to send us the relevant information only after seven days, all we could do was ask the Romanian jury for official explanations, “post-factum,” on the vote in the second semifinal. Even in this context, in which we have already been tried and sanctioned, without being given the opportunity to defend ourselves, TVR will collaborate with all other sanctioned televisions to find out if the reported irregularities were the result of an attempted fraud.

Another point to note is that the EBU has prevention and control mechanisms. When there is a suspicion of a jury, it may send observers to oversee the voting process. This is what happened this year when the EBU decided to send observers to two of the six sanctioned countries.

The conclusion of the observers was that the vote was regular and they did not report any misconduct or attempted fraud. This is one of the reasons why at the beginning of the final audition for the public, the EBU representative announced that all the votes cast by the jurors are valid.

In the case of these countries, the organizers did not report “irregular voting patterns.” Moreover, they were given the most points awarded, by “algorithm”, from the countries sanctioned for voting among themselves. Of the six countries accused of having an onerous deal to reach the final, only three succeeded. Of the three countries that received points by “algorithm” from sanctioned countries, all managed to enter the final.

The incomprehensible attitude of the EBU towards TVR, a traditional member of this organization, which deserves to be treated with respect, is also underlined by the fact that the Eurovision organizers chose to lie during the transmission of the final results of the competition. When it was Romania’s turn to announce the result of the jury’s vote, the organizers invoked a non-existent technical problem to present the notes provided by the “algorithm.”

We reiterate what we said in our first statement: there was no technical problem! Eda Marcus was ready to go live, and the connection worked perfectly. The only reason we were forbidden to announce the vote of the Romanian jury, which had awarded 12 points to Moldova, was that we refused to accept the score imposed by the EBU.

Following the situation created and the image damage brought to the public television, the TVR representatives consider the withdrawal of Romania from the future editions of Eurovision and the action in court of the event organizers.

Romania: The finalists of the Selecţia Naţională 2022!

The semifinal of Selecţia Naţională 2022 has just ended! We now know the ten finalists who will claim the Romanian representation in Turin, in the final of the Selecţia Naţională 2022, which will take place on March 5th.

The show

Hosts of Selecţia Naţională 2022 are Anca Mazilu and Bogdan Stănescu. The team of presenters is completed by Ilinca Băcilă, representative of Romania at Eurovision 2017, who was with the contestants in the Green Room.

The 20 artists who were selected to compete in today’s semifinal, performed live the entries and were judged exclusively by the five-member jury, which determined the results.

Romania: Online voting for Selecţia Naţională 2022 semifinal has started!

Voting for the first part of the semifinals of the Romanian selection for the Eurovision 2022 Song Contest has just begun.

From 19:00 (CET) the public can vote for their favorite songs competing in the Selecţia Naţională 2022. You can vote for 24 hours HERE.

Once the vote is closed, the five entries that received the most votes will make a place in Saturday’s televised semifinal.

A jury has already voted on the 45 songs currently competing in the Selecţia Naţională 2022. The 15 entrants who received the highest critical votes but were not in the top 5 will also compete in the semifinals.

Romania: The jury has concluded for the first part of the Selecţia Naţională 2022 semi-final!

Romanian broadcaster TVR has announced that the jury’s vote which will determine the songs from the first part of the Selecţia Naţională 2022 semifinal that will be passing to the next stage has been completed.

The jury has been tasked to rate all 45 candidates competing for a place in Saturday’s second part of the semifinal. 15 of them will win the ticket for the second part of the semifinal, provided that the public did not also choose them.

Specifically, the public voting for the first part of the semifinal will start tomorrow afternoon at 19:00 CET, with the public choosing 5 songs for the second part of the semi on Saturday. The 15 songs that emerged after the jury vote will be the 15 songs that scored the highest in the juries and that, at the same time, did not make it into the audience’s top 5.

Romania: Three shows for the auditions of the Selectia Nationala 2022 semi-finals!

On Saturday 5 February, the programmes dedicated to the semi-finals of the 2022 National Selection, “Drumul spre Torino” (Road to Turin), will begin.

With the first of the three parts of the show starting on February 5 and the third one concluding on February 7. The three shows will therefore take place on 5-7 February, on TVR 1 with exclusive pictures from the National Selection semi-finals.

On 9 and 10 February, fans will be able to vote for their favourite songs on the official Eurovision Romania Facebook page.

The broadcast for the conclusion of the semi-final will take place on Saturday 12 February, live on TVR.

The semi-final schedule is as follows:

  • Saturday 5 February (at 23:00 local time)
  • Sunday 6 February (at 22:30 local time)
  • Monday 7 February (at 22:50 local time)

You can watch all three shows on TVR 1, TVR International and TVR Moldova (9-11 February, at 23:05).  The videos of the 46 semi-final songs will also be broadcasted on the official website eurovision.tvr.ro, on TVR’s YouTube channel and on the Eurovision Romania Facebook page.

The presenter will be Ilinca Băcilă (Representative of Romania in 2017), where for the first time she will exclusively broadcast footage from the filming, the impressions of the semi-final judges and the emotions and joy of the competition for the biggest international music competition in the world.

This is the fifth year in a row that I have been part of Eurovision in one way or another. I represented Romania in the contest, I was on the national jury, the international jury, I presented Romania’s score in the international phase and this year I have the opportunity to be with those who are struggling to represent our country.

This time I will meet again with the Eurovision fans from the position of the presenter of the three shows in which you will have the opportunity to get to know the semi-finals of this year’s edition.

During these shows, viewers will get to know the 2022 National Selection semi-finals better and join the organisers in the feverish preparations for the show on 12 February.

The week dedicated to the semi-finals in Romania will continue with the public vote. For the first time, fans will be able to vote for their favourite songs on the official Facebook page of the national competition on Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 February, where they can nominate five songs for the second stage of the semi-finals. The jury will qualify another 15 and the semi-final will conclude on 12 February with the TV show, in which the expert jury will select only ten songs for the grand final.

The last act of the selection will take place on 5 March, when we will find out the name of Romania’s representative in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Romania: Filming for the Selecţia Naţional semi-final is underway!

The filming of the live performances of songs competing in the semi-final of Selecţia Naţional in Romania is underway at a TVR studio in Bucharest. The 46 participants have been filming their live performances since Thursday.

The performances of the artists will be uploaded online on February 5 and later, on February 9 and 10, the public will be able to vote for their favorite. The jury will select 15 songs to advance to the second part of the semi-final, while the audience will select 5 songs.

The second phase of the semi-final will take place on February 12, which will also be televised. There, the 20 songs that will have been selected will compete for the ten places of the final, while the verdict will belong exclusively to the members of the jury.

In the Grand Final, to be held on March 5, the 10 best songs will perform again and the winner will be selected by a combination of jury and audience votes. As in previous years, the televoting score will have the same weight as the score given by each member of the jury.

Romania: Everything that was discussed on the special show about the analysis of the bad results!

As we informed you in our previous article, the Romanian public television (TVR) organized on July 5 in prime time, a special show, where the series of bad results of the country in the contest were discussed, while solutions were also sought.

Wrong choice of artists and lack of direction the two big thorns

The show presented by the journalist and former head of the Romanian mission in the competition, Marina Almăşan, and participated many people from the music industry, but also former eurostars, such as The Humans, Ovi, Paula Seling, but also Mihai Traistariu , focused mainly on this year ‘s failure of Roxen.

Most of the panel members criticized Roxen for her choice, both on TVR and on the record label Global Music, as they mentioned her complete lack of experience, but also her mediocre vocal skills did not help her to stand out and qualify for final.

Almost everyone agreed that it was wrong for TVR to leave the project entirely to the record company, since while both the guy and the fans pointed out the mistakes, the record company did nothing to correct them (I do not know if this reminds you of something…) .

The other big problem that many were left with was the issue of directing. Mihai Traistariu stated that unfortunately TVR does not seem to be able to successfully undertake the staging of the Romanian entries. What has been suggested by many is the collaboration with foreign directors, something that many countries are already doing. In fact, it is worth noting at this point that the names of Sacha Jean Baptiste were mentioned, but also of Fokas Evangelinos.

Romania will be present in 2022

It seems that Romania will be present in Italy next year, at least that is what was said on the show. The most probable scenario is the return to the national final, the well-known Selectia Nationala and the subsequent support of the song that will be selected by TVR, so that at least in the next competition the country will return to the final. The format supported for the Selectia Nationala is 50% audience – 50% juries.

The observations of the Romanians are correct and we are happy because they largely agree with what we proposed and wrote in our relevant editorial. If the respective national public broadcaster is not interested and does not deal, no external partner and no record company can bring a good result. The examples are endless.

See the case of France. From the moment the external partner they had for both the Junior Eurovision and the regular Eurovision contest left, they won and took second place respectively. See the case of Switzerland, which with a stable team in recent years manages to star. On the other hand, see what happened in the United Kingdom, the BBC’s complete indifference, brought BMG to things as a machine god…. The result is one last place with an absolute 0 in the audience and juries! Of course, there is also the example of ERT, which since 2019 has taken the project in its hands and has literally achieved leaps in relation to the recent past.

The secret recipe for success by Christer Bjorkman

This is the solution for Romania and for all the other countries that have bad results. A conscious group, which will aim not just to participate, but the good result and which of course will methodize and organize everything related to the selection of the song, whether it is through a national final or through an assignment, aiming at its 3 minutes May and nothing else. Far from meaningless comments and complaints of the fans, without looking at bets and without being influenced by record and external factors.

In this year’s interview, Christer Bjorkman “revealed” the secret for a successful participation in the competition:

“Three things must have a participation to go well. A good song, a bright and good performer and a careful stage presence. The first is the hardest to find. But if you have the other two, then you can do very well. ”

So the choice of the right artist, as well as the careful stage presence, are two elements that every broadcaster can work and carefully build, so that it has more chances of success in the competition. Romania: “Maybe, it is healthier to stay out for a year or two…”!

Third disqualification in a row for Romania was this year, after Roxen failed to qualify for the first semifinal. The reasons for the continuous bad results in the contest will be discussed by the country’s public television, in a two-hour live show, on July 5 at 9 pm.

The former head of the Romanian mission and TVR journalist, Marina Almăşan, is editing and will present the relevant show, called Eurovision, pe şleau! (Eurovision by the way).

The panel of the show will include composers, music producers, fans of the contest, but also three former eurostars of the country, The Humans (2018), Ovi and Paula Seling (2010, 2014). The public can also intervene in the discussion by phone.

The questions that the show panel will be asked to answer are:

  • “Why don’t Romania’s big voices participate in Eurovision?”
  • “Why has Romanian interest in Eurovision decreased so much?”
  • “What are the solutions to deal with the situation?”

Marina Almăşan reports:

It has been 11 years since I was at the helm of one of the most successful versions of Eurovision. In 2010, the wonderful Paula and Ovi brought Romania a third place in the Grand Final in Oslo, the artists surpassed the performance of Luminiţa Anghel.

I was at that time, the head of the Romanian delegation, and my team was on the buttons, in all these preparatory work – internal and external. Of course, without the two great voices, without the song, without the talent of the two talented artists, we would not have gotten here. There were, therefore, years during which Romanian Television (through my other valuable colleagues) did a very good job in the European competition.

Then, suddenly, the movie broke. And in recent years they have brought a lot of frown and sadness on the faces of Romanian Eurovision fans. On Monday, July 5, TVR finally wants to put its finger on the wound: find the weaknesses (but also the strengths, because they also exist) of our participation in Eurovision, propose solutions to rectify the situation and wash away shame .

I will coordinate an intense discussion, on the afternoon of the 5th of July, on TVR 1, with selected and specialized guests and even if it comes out with tensions and disagreements, it is important that things go smoothly. And in the next edition, Romania must reach the top 10! … If, after discussions, it does not turn out that, perhaps, it is healthier to stay out for a year or two…! It is striking that the possibility of Romania abstaining from the contest for one or two years is mentioned, in order for them to regroup and come back stronger afterwards. Greece followed the same tactic in 2000, when it voluntarily withdrew, to return in 2001 with a third place and Antique.

Romania: Roxen has found her song for Eurovision 2021!

On March 25, Roxen confirmed through her Instagram profile that she will represent her country at Eurovision 2021.

Today, posting in the flow of her stories on Instagram, she revealed that she has found the song with which she will represent Romania in Eurovision 2021.

Roxen reports:

It seems that Roxen’s song is ready and will be selected by internal selection, but something is still to be official.
