Switzerland: The country confirms its participation in Eurovision 2024!

Switzerland officially confirmed that they are going to take part in Eurovision Song Contest 2024, taking place in Malmö, Sweden.

SRF, the public broadcaster of the country, confirmed their participation through an email to the website, That Eurovision Site. However, SRF,  didn’t give out any further info on the selection process, but in recent years, the country is used to internal selections.

As it seems, preparations have already begun, for at least a month now. The representative of Austria in this year’s contest, Teya, posted a tweet saying that she was part of a listening session of a candidate song for Switzerland,  and even being sure that this is the track that will represent the country!

The representative of Switzerland in Eurovision 2023 was Remo Forrer, with his song “Watergun”, ending up in 20th place in the Grand Final:

Netherlands: Is Douwe Bob coming back for Eurovision 2024?

The first non-qualification in Eurovision for the Netherlands after six consecutive qualifications and even one win, caused many internal changes in the Dutch delegation. AVROTROS appointed a new head of delegation and there will be changes in the internal selection to come.

The Dutch delegation ruled out a massive change in the selection process and the conduction of a national final right from the start, due to low interest from the Dutch music industry. Instead, and according to the new head of delegation, Twan van de Nieuwenhuijzen, the changes that will be made to the existing system in order to ensure transparency, will include live performances of the candidates and people outside of AVROTROS in the jury.

In this open internal selection, Douwe Bob, Dutch representative in Eurovision 2016, might want to compete. As his manager stated in Shownieuws, the singer wants to compete in the internal selection, saying that:

“Douwe Bob would like to compete again in Eurovision. Even though we do not have any specific song, we hope to submit one”

Douwe Bob represented the Netherlands in Eurovision 2016 in Stockholm, with his song “Slow Down” ending up in 11th place. He is not the only artist that want to compete in Eurovision 2024. Both Bizzey & Kraantje Pappie as a duet, as well as De Bankzitters want to submit songs.

Spain: Ruth Lorenzo expresses her frustration on a participation on Benidorm Fest 2024!

Despite her strong interest, Ruth Lorenzo has decided not to take part in Benidorm Fest 2024. The singer who represented Spain at Eurovision 2014 has revealed that she was considering taking part in the next RTVE national final, but this year’s rules will prevent her from doing so.

Through her social media accounts, the singer explained that she wanted to participate with her song “Woman”, one of the tracks of her latest EP. In order to be able to compete, she decided to remove it from her album, before its release on April 14.

However there was a change in plans. Ruth Lorenzo said:

“I was informed, unofficially, that this year at Benidorm Fest they were going to accept 100% songs in English.

Being the most important song of this EP, with the most important message and with a sound that marks a before and after in my career, I wanted to give you the gift of presenting it at Benidorm Fest trying to return to Eurovision after ten years. Unfortunately, “Woman” was not chosen to compete at the Festival.”

The track is set to be released on September 1st, and she considers it very important to her now that she is in a new phase of her life where she is 100% free after overcoming her problems with her previous record company.

“I am now establishing myself, as an independent label for future work”

Benidorm Fest rules allow song lyrics to be mainly in Spanish and/or another official language, however, lyrics in other languages are acceptable as long as they do not exceed 40% of the total lyrics.

The previous winner of Benidorm Fest and Spain’s representative at Eurovision 2023, was Blanca Paloma with the song “EaEa” and placed 17th in the Grand Final:

The Netherlands: AVROTROS opens songs submission and announces new Head of Delegation!

The national broadcaster of the Netherlands, AVROTROS, made two important Eurovision related announcements today.

The first announcement is about the selection method for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö, Sweden. For a 12th consecutive year, the broadcaster chooses the internal selection, with the songs submissions commencing today until the 30th of September. The only change this time is that the songs do not have to have set artists.

The second announcement is about the position of the Head of Delegation. AVROTROS stated that the position of the Head of Delegation was appointed to Twan van de Nieuwenhuijzen who is also going to be the chairman of the Dutch selection committee.

In his previous position he was the Head of Contest for the EBU during Eurovision 2021, 2022, and 2023.

This year the Kingdom of the Netherlands was represented in Liverpool by Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper and the song “Burning Daylight”.  They ended up in the 13th place of the First Semi-Final, receiving only 7 points and thus failing to qualify to the Grand Final.

Luxembourg: The public will get to vote in the new national final!

Dave Gloesener, head of the Eurovision project at RTL, said in an interview that the country’s TV audience will “have a say” in Luxembourg’s new national final, which returns after a 30-year absence at Eurovision 2024.

The show, which will take place on 27 January 2024 and mark Luxembourg’s return to Eurovision, will give viewers the opportunity to participate in the selection process of the artist who will represent the Grand Duchy in Malmö, Sweden.

Speaking to Delano, Gloesener says the decision to hold a national final in Luxembourg was made “without thought”:

“We have been away for a long time and it is important to bring Luxembourg to Eurovision in the right way.”

He also confirmed that the show, which will be held at the Rockhal in Esch-sur-Alzette, will be broadcast live online with commentary in three different languages.

Eric Lehmann, Eurovision project coordinator at RTL, believes that hosting the show is an opportunity for Luxembourg to be seen on the international stage – and the benefits are already being felt:

“Our return to Eurovision has received very positive feedback worldwide and there is also incredible interest in our national selection. The reactions have been extremely encouraging, it’s a source of great pride.”

Luxembourg’s return will not be temporary. After 30 years away from the show and 40 years since the nation last won the contest, Gloesener believes it’s time for Luxembourg to leave its mark on Eurovision again:

“We aim to do very well in the Eurovision Song Contest next year and turn a new page in Eurovision for Luxembourg. We are here to stay.”

Eurovision 2024: Netta predicts the host city wrong for yet another time!

A few hours ago, Malmö was crowned the host city of Eurovision Song Contest 2024, through the social media accounts of the contest

The final decision was made between four cities, alongside Stockholm and Gothenburg, both of them previous host cities.

Of course, the winner of Eurovision 2018, Netta, couldn’t miss on commenting on the selection of the city. We could say that it’s now become a tradition for Netta to predict (wrong) the host city of the next contest. Netta’s previous predictions are:

  • For 2019 she predicted Jerusalem, but in the the host city was Tel Aviv
  • For 2021 she predicted Amsterdam , but in the the host city was Rotterdam
  • For 2022 she predicted Rome, but in the the host city was Turin
  • For 2023 she predicted Manchester but in the the host city was Liverpool

Just some time after the announcement of Malmö as the host city, a short video that shows Netta, moments after her performance on the Grand Final, predicting the host city of Eurovision 2024, was posted on Twitter.

As we can all guess, Netta of course didn’t predict Malmö. Instead she put her bet on Stockholm.

As we can see, Netta predicted the host city wrong for the fifth time in a row. Will she be able to turn the tables next year?

Breaking News: Eurovision 2024 will NOT take place in Gothenburg or Örnsköldsvik! | Host city expected to be announced at 2pm CET!

Gothenburg, Stockholm, Malmö and Örnsköldsvik have applied to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, after Loreen has won this year’s contest with the song “Tattoo“.

Today, Göteborg & Company received information from SVT‘s project manager that the Eurovision Song Contest will not be held in Gothenburg next year.

Magnus Hallberg, vice president & event manager at Göteborg & Co. mentions:

“It’s very sad. We are competitive people so we would have liked to have won and also had great support from politicians, the Swedish trade fair, the hotels and Gothia. But it is what it is.”

SVT did not give any reason why Gothenburg was not awarded the host of Eurovision. Also, according to information to Aftonbladet, as Annie Månsson and Torbjörn Ek reported a few minutes ago, Örnsköldsvik is also not selected to organize the competition.

SVT is expected to announce which city will be selected to host the event today, as we have already informed you a couple of weeks ago, and according to Aftonbladet at 2pm CET.

Sweden: SVT will announce the host city of next year’s contest, next week!

As we have already written in many of our past articles about the host city race of next year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden, the announcement is expected to be made on the 7th of July.

Göteborgs-Posten today confirms that, by the end of next week, SVT will announce the city that will get the chance to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, following Loreen’s second victory with the song “Tattoo”. That means that in less than a week from now we will know which of the cities that have submitted their bid, will be selected to host next year’s contest!

But how probable is it for each city that has submitted a bid, to host next year’s contest? Read more below!

Four cities in the hopes of hosting next year’s contest

Malmö has always expressed a strong interest in hosting the contest and they have officially submitted their bid to host next year’s contest! Malmö had hosted it back in 1992 and also in 2013 after the first victory of Loreen in 2012 with the iconic Swedish entry “Euphoria“.

Currently, Malmö has the biggest chances to host next year’s contest and less than seven days are left until the announcement which will make it clear if Malmö will get selected to be the host city or not!

As already reported, Stockholm has officially submitted their bid to host the contest that Loreen brought back home with her second victory one month ago.

Stockholm currently faces a few issues, mostly regarding the hosting venue of the contest. Friends Arena is booked for Taylor Swift’s concerts on the 17th and 18th of May and Tele2 Arena is booked throughout May for the football matches of AIK and Hammarby Fotboll respectively.

Another issue that has come up, is the fact that the hosting bid of Stockholm City, includes plans to build a temporary arena from scratch, at Frihamnen port of Stockholm, which will then become the center of the event and the arena, which will hold between 11,000 and 15,000 people, will also remain for a limited time, then it will be removed.

According to Aftonbladet’s Fredrik Björkman, Moderaternas, or Moderates in English, a liberal-conservative party, strongly opposes to the case that such a decision is taken. More specifically, Dennis Wedin, opposition city councillor of the political party, has mentioned:

“It is unacceptable that Stockholm’s taxpayers should be stuck with building a new arena linked to this when we have so many other core municipal activities that need money right now in a tough financial situation. It sounds very tone-deaf!”

Following the submission of Stockholm, Gothenburg wouldn’t miss out on submitting their own bid to host the contest next year. Gothenburg has only hosted the contest back in 1985 and it seem like they are quite eager to host next year’s contest.

However, Scandinavium, which could be the venue to host the contest in case Gothenburggets selected as the host city of 2024, has some accessibility issues that might not allow the city to be selected. For the same reasons Gothenburg bid had gotten rejected by EBU in the recent past.

According to reports from SVT, Gothenburg’s political majority back the city council’s bid to host next year’s contest! This came up from the announcement that the city’s red-green party gave, on Wednesday evening.

Municipal councillor Daniel Bernmar has stated:

”It would benefit both the citizens of Gothenburg and cultural life. We can do this with large international events, so we see it as positive”

Örnsköldsvik has never hosted the Eurovision Song Contest before. Övik is a small city up north in Sweden, in Västernorrland with a little less than 33.000 inhabitants.

Örnsköldsvik had hosted this year’s Melodifestivalen Semifinalen at Hägglunds Arena, where the arena looked a bit tiny compared to other shows of the tour. The municipality in order to tackle any accommodation issues and to be able to welcome all the event visitors, said that cruise ships in the harbor will be used as additional accommodation.

This came as a response to several reports back in the beginning of March, of rip-off prices to a rather limited and not decent enough selection of hotel rooms when the Semi-Final show of Melodifestivalen took place there, making us think that the chances of Örnsköldsvik hosting the contest are a bit tad.

Luxembourg: Ready to host Eurovision 2025!

A few days before the Eurovision 2024 selection process announcement, the Prime Minister of Luxembourg again commented on the return of the Grand Duchy to the contest.

Xavier Bettel who is in addition to Prime Minister and Minister of Media and Communications gave an interview to RTL about the return of this small nation of Central Western Europe to the Eurovision Song Contest. He believes that Eurovision offers the possibility for Luxembourg to increase its international visibility and develop its creative and music industry.

In addition, Mr. Bettel confirmed that in the event of Luxembourg winning by returning in 2024, the country is ready to host the contest in 2025. For Xavier Bettel, hosting the Eurovision Song Contest would be positive for Luxembourg as it would offer huge opportunities for the touristic industry in the country.

Regarding participation in Eurovision 2024, the Prime Minister revealed additional details ahead of the official announcements expected on 3 July. He explained that the representative should have a “Luxembourgish cultural background”. This comment implies that artists from outside Luxembourg’s borders can also represent the country in Sweden.

The last participation of Luxembourg was in 1993 in Millstreet of Ireland when the small nation was represented by the group Modern Times and the song “Donne-moi une chance”sung in French and Luxembourgish. At the end of the show the country finished 20th with only 11 points.

Eurovision 2024 Luxembourg: Details about the upcoming preselection!

After the shocking announcement of Luxembourg’s long-awaited return to the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time in 30 years,the country’s public broadcaster RTL seems to be more invested in the contest than ever,with the preselection process starting on the 3rd of July.

Aspiring contestants and songwriters may check the broadcaster’s official website www.eurovision.lu for all the steps required for their candidate song’s submission.

Luxembourg in the Contest

Luxembourg was one of the seven countries that took part in the inaugural song contest in 1956 and managed to win the contest five times within 37 years.They last took part in 1993 when they reached the 20th place.
