Eurovision 2020: The contest so far or “The Good EurovisionFun’s Calendar”

With 160 days left for the biggest celebration of music, less than half a year, the interest in the entire european continent begins to peak. It also contributes to this, in addition to breaking the 12-month mark as we are already halfway through, the fact that as December is moving forward, the first national final, that of Albania is going to take place which means that we can officially talk about the beginning of the key processes: artist and song!

Across the European continent, the participating countries and their public broadcasters are preparing feverishly for the finding of the best act and the most impressive appearance in general.

ESC 2020, as is well known, will take place on 11-16 May 2020 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands with the two semifinals taking place on 12 and 14 May,respectively and the grand final on Saturday 16 May at Ahoy Stadium. We also recently learned about this year’s Euroclub venue, which will be Maassilo. Our slogan for this year is “Open Up” and this year’s logo is as below:

In addition, the first pictures of the stage were released as well as details of its construction and the event’s setting up while the creative team that will lift the burden of this year’s semi-finals and grand final was announced. 20. Iceland (RTE)
  21. Israel (IPBC/KAN)
  22. Italy (RAI)
  23. Latvia (LTV)
  24. Lithuania (LRT)
  25. Malta (PBS)
  26. Moldova (TRM)
  27. Netherlands (AVROTROS)

  37. Spain (TVE)
  38. Sweden (SVT)
  39. Switzerland (SRG SSR)
  40. Ukraine (UA:PBC)
  41. United Kingdom (BBC)

Together with us in Rotterdam this year there will be two countries abducted last year (Bulgaria and Ukraine), while we will not see two others (Hungary and Montenegro) which travelled traveling to Tel Aviv last year.

Of these, 35 will split and compete in the two semifinals, with only ten of each semifinal qualifying for the grand final where they will meet the host countries and the Big 5 (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom),as they qualify directly to the final. So in total we will see 26 countries claiming the grand prize.

Artist and song: The crucial choice

As time goes on, the key question, of course, that concerns all Eurofans across Europe is “who and what”! Who will represent each country and with what song? There are basically two options for this choice: internal selection (by the broadcaster) and national final (which includes active public participation). There is no EBU rule for this choice, and each country is free to choose, without necessarily having a regular method.

In view of the above, let’s have a  look in detail at the information available to us so that each of the 41 participating countries will choose to participate this year*:

NATIONAL FINAL                      DIRECT ASSIGNMENT            NO INFORMATION
ALBANIA AUSTRIA AZERBAIJAN
ARMENIA BELGIUM BELARUS
AUSTRALIA BULGARIA NORTH MACEDONIA
CROATIA CYPRUS POLAND
DENMARK GERMANY SAN MARINO
ESTONIA IRELAND
FINLAND MOLDOVA
FRANCE** SWITZERLAND
GEORGIA GREECE
ICELAND NETHERLANDS
ISRAEL SPAIN
ITALY*** United Kingdom
LATVIA CZECH REP. (on-line voting)
LITHUANIA RUSSIA
MALTA
NORWAY
PORTUGAL
ROMANIA
SERBIA
SLOVENIA
UKRAINE
SWEDEN

So, it seems from the above table that:

-22 countries will hold national final

-14 will select internally and

– for 5 more we have no data

* Of course, it should be noted here that the above data can at any time change and some countries may change the designation for this year’s selection.

**France used the national final “Eurovision Destination” last year to select its representative and it looks like it will do the same this year. However, the information we receive from France 2 is ambiguous and there is a high likelihood of making an internal selection this year.

***Italy uses for the selection of its representative the famous San Remo festival, which is also the ancestor of ESC, but it is not compulsory the winner of this festival to represent the country in Eurovision as well.

To date, the artists we know are:

-Spain: Blas Cantó

-Belgium: Hooverphonic

-Cyprus: Sandro Nicolas

-Bulgaria: Victoria Georgieva

In the last hours, there are also rumors that Austria will choose Vincent Bueno.

Interval Acts by famous Eurostars

A few days ago, we informed you that the explosive Eleni Foureira will make her appearance at FiK 2019.

The news now seems to be confirmed with the sexy singer getting ready to set fire to the stage once again.

He may not have won this year’s Contest, but he made the most success of any artist. The reason for Mahmood to land on the FiK stage for a strong appearance.

Finally, a great Italian artist also announces her presence in Albania’s largest festival.

Guisy Ferreri, who has been to San Remo in the past, will also come to the FiK stage to impress us once again with her distinctive voice.

The two FiK semifinals will take place on December 19th and 20th, while the Grand Final, where we will also learn Albania’s 17th representative at the Eurovision Song Contest, will take place on December 22nd. The host of the Festivali i Kenges 58 will be Alketa Vejsiu, and as we have already informed you, this year, FiK included a three-member International Jury.

Georgia: The results of the 4th Live Show

The 7th live show of The Georgian idol (or The star of Georgia) was aired tonight in Tbilisi  got for another time the Georgian audience’s interest. The interest for this talent show remains high as it is the national method for the country’s representative in Eurovision Song Contest. The 7 remaining contestants from the previous show were running the battle to remain attributing excellent performances for once again.

The 7 artists competing today in Tbilisi were the following:

-Barbara Samkharadze
-Anri Guchmanidze
-Kipiani Tornike
-Davit Rusadze
-Mariam Shengelia
-Mariam Gogiberidze
-Tamar Kakalashvili

The aforementioned candidates, after their performances, were judged by the four-member jury of the show, Tinatin Berdzenishvili, David Evgenidze, Natia Todua and David Aladashvili, and after the televoting the results came up as follows:

-Kipiani Tornike-24,05%
-Barbara Samkharadze-15,15%
-Mariam Gogiberidze-14,06%
-Tamar Kakalashvili-13,79%
-Mariam Shengelia-12,26%
-Davit Rusadze-10,79%
-Anri Guchmanidze-9,90%

So based on the above, the artist  who left today was Anri Guchmanidze as he had the lowest scoring percentage while  Tornike Kipiani was the big winner and the leader of score board once again.

We remind you that unlike this year where Georgian Idol selected both the artist and the song that represented Georgia at the Eurovision Contest, for 2020 only the artist will be selected through the popular talent show, since the song will be followed by internal selection.

Hungary: Kati Wolf and AWS disagree over Eurovision withdrawal

As we informed you in our previous article, Hungary will not participate in Eurovision 2020. The “A Dal” regulations, used since 2012 as Hungary’s national final for Eurovision, did not mention the Eurovision contest, and part of the regulations were in breach of EBU regulations, which meant that the “A Dal 2020” would have nothing to do with the country’s participation in Eurovision. Finally, it was not on the official list of the EBU, with the countries to take part in Rotterdam.

At the same time, people around the world have reported from major news agencies (Independent, BBC, The Guardian, etc.) that the real reason for Hungary’s withdrawal from the competition is its excessive gay element, according to the country’s government, which has been disputed by itself.

Domestic reactions

Many were the domestic artists in Hungary, who opposed the decision of their country’s public broadcaster.

In an interview on RTL channel, the country’s representative  in 2011, Kati Wolf, said that she has gained something from her participation in Eurovision. Specifically, it states:

“I have won a lot of fans thanks to Eurovision. Since joining Eurovision in 2011, I’ve been traveling and appearing all over Europe and I think we need to go, make an appearance and not sit at home”

Finally, she did not omit to mention what’s he would like to not only participate in A Dal but to represent Hungary again in Eurovision!

Kati Wolf represented her country in 2011 with the song “What About My Dreams”, where she finished 22nd with 53 points.

AWS represented Hungary at Eurovision 2018. The band’s leader, Örs Siklós, also commented on Hungary’s non-participation in Eurovision 2020.

“Every country is trying to send in an artist who is a little different and stands out, either in his music, appearance and work or in his style. That’s what differentiated us from the rest, and it was so amazing to see Eurovision fans, who are usually not familiar with metal music, lure us in and love our music. And I think we’ve gained a lot from our participation in Eurovision. It is very sad that Hungary will not participate in the next Eurovision. Honestly, I wasn’t attending the competition before we got in, but this year I was watching everything and supporting Joci”

AWS, with the song “Viszlát nyár”, placed Hungary 21st with 93 points.

This is the fourth time Hungary has withdrawn from the Eurovision contest. The first time was in 1999, when sustained for six years. It returned in 2005, abstained in 2006 in Athens and returned the following year. It last absence was in 2010, when for financial reasons the country preferred to stay away.

Eurostars:Sergey’s back again?

Last Tuesday “Victoria” music awards took place in Kremlin and among all the famous Russian stars, Sergey Lazarev was there as well. During red carpet, the artist was asked by dni.ru if he still wants to take revenge and bring ESC back to Russia!

“I can still impress, I have something to show. I have many qualities, including musical ones, which I maybe didn’t demonstrate at competitions in 2016 and 2019,” Sergey smiled. “I don’t exclude the possibility of going to Eurovision once again, but I declare with all responsibility: this will definitely not happen in 2020.”

As for now, Sergey is getting ready for a new grand show and its premiere is scheduled for the spring of 2021.

Next year, Channel One will be in charge of the selection of the participant for the competition. As always there are rumors that Alexander Panayotov, Olga Buzova or Zivert can represent Russia. But Sergey has a different point of view.

“In my opinion, should take part a new name, a new artist. I wouldn’t like to point out someone specifically, so not to be accused of partiality.”

Would you like to see Sergey again to Eurovision stage?

Albania: Three-member International Panel at FiK 2019

In a few days we will be able to listen to the songs competing at Festivali i Kenges 58 to claim Albanian representation at Eurovision 2020. An important innovation for this year’s FiK is the introduction of an international jury, next to the classic jury. Among the 3 members of the international committee a popular and beloved Greek creator will be!

The results at Festivali i Kenges with some minor variations are determined each year by a special jury comprising people from the home music scene. Italy: €40 million in advertising revenue for Sanremo 2020 broadcasts

RAI and the new artistic director of the Sanremo Festival, Amadeus, are in a fever pitch to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the historic music festival. As the Italian public television announced recently, the advertising time during the 5-day broadcast of the Sanremo 2020 has already been sold, for a record price of 40 million Euros!

The advertising time during the broadcasts of the 70th Sanremo Italian Song Festival costs approx. 12.000 per second! Of course the exclusive rights of Sanremo are reserved by RAI, which proves that a public television can be both competitive, commercial, and quality!

Advertising time has been sold for all five nights of the festival. RAI earns a record $ 40 million and is the most expensive television time in the country!

The Mediterranean RAI exemplifies in other similar public TVs that when you invest somewhere over time, producing a good result, then you have a program, but you also have income.

We remind you that the 20 artists of the Campioni category of the Sanremo 2020 will be announced in a special show by Amadeus on January 6th. The 70th Sanremo Song Festival will take place at Teatro Ariston in the small town of Liguria, San Remo, from February 4 to February 8, 2020.

Greece: Working Group composition not to be announced soon| The way Greek participation will be selected! EXCLUSIVE

The announcement of the ERT working group was widely expected this week, following reports that confirmed it. In the end, this has not happened and will not be done until at least the final details of the procedure to be followed by ERT for the selection of the greek representative at Eurovision 2020 will be settled.

The committee may not have been announced, but that does not mean that ERT is not preparing for its next involvement. It has already held a number of formal and informal meetings over the past period and appears to have come up with the procedure to choose this year’s representative.

An open national final is not going to take place as we have written for months, since neither the time nor the ability to organize something worthwhile would have been possible. What qualifies is an internal choice. Indeed, it is very likely that there will be some kind of open invitation to interested artists and creators. The working group, which this year will be a 6-member group, in which the composer Dimitris Papadimitriou will again participate, will be invited to propose to the Board of Directors the best of the proposals. Then the Board of Directors. whether or not to approve the proposal of the working group.

The working group will be announced in the coming days (with no announcement coming next week), after all the details of the selection process have been settled and decided. In addition,  these days the head of the Greek Delegation  and International Relations Manager, Maria Koufopoulou, is in Geneva, in the General Assembly of the EBU.

Anyone in a hurry should think that the relevant  announcement last year was made on 10 January. The intention of the new ERT administration is to do everything possible for Greece to be at the top 10 of the Eurovision 2020 rankings and we do not hide that we are optimistic that it will do so!

The new Head of Delegation has been a senior executive at France TV for years, having even recently spent time as the organization’s entertainment director. The selection of an executive from France TV’s top management post to the position of head of delegation indicates how important French public television now attaches to the contest.

We are now eagerly awaiting the final announcements of France on how to choose to participate in Eurovision 2020!
